Asus Rampage III Formula

Thought you guys might like to share this review of the Asus Rampage II Formula

IMG_9833.jpg

I don't think it's quite as good looking as the Asus Crosshair IV Formula. Looking at the options for LN2, the Digi+ and extra BIOS feartures and tweaks it looks a bit more muscular  That's first initial impression anyways. There'as a lot more features to explore :)

Yeah $280 would have been nicer, it's basically going up against the GA-x58-UD5. The R3F has Intel ethernet tho, so that's something to keep in mind.

I keep hearing that Intel ethernet is so much better, but what makes it so good?

it doesn't create any cpu load when in use, I think all other consumer grade do. I forget the specifics, but that's the 'jist of it.

cool board, I just want intel to get sata III and usb 3.0 on their SB already.

It's available at NewEgg now. I'm a little disappointed at the price; I thought it would be about $20 cheaper. If a deal pops up, though, I'll be jumping on it.
Yes I guess it will probably settle a little lower, most new boards seem to haeve a premium at 1st then settle back.

Too true after coming back from the AMD 890FX and the Crosshair IV that's a real PIA. :)

This mobo is absolutely perfect! This is THE x58 mobo I've been waiting for, its a RE3 without all the useless fluff. I already have an X58 mobo and I would definitely jump on this if Intel wasn't releasing LGA2011 so soon.

this is normally true, but I was watching the price on the somewhat recently released rampage iii gene and the price recently jumped $10. found it kind of odd, but I guess they're selling quite well.

By soon you mean Q3-Q4 2011, or has it changed?

I wouldn't expect there to be any good overclocking capabilities in the 2011 socket for quite some time, you never know though.

yep good point also The Sandy Bridge Preview makes interesting reading.

Also from abaove article
The high end Sandy Bridge parts don't arrive until the second half of 2011 which add more cores and more memory bandwidth.
so you pays yer $ and takes your choice :)

Anyone seen a head to head of the Rampage III Formula vs the MSI Big Bang Xpower X58? Would like to see them directly compared (especially since they seem to be the two I am trying to choose between at this time).

There isn't much of anything out about the R3Formula right now, and it's shipping from newegg. Not sure what ASUS had going on about this release, but there is zero outside of a few EU reviews.

My rampage 2 gene died recently and I liked the R3 extreme but was put off by the price. I was about to order the xpower and now i see this. They look fairly similar in features. Anyone see any major disadvantages of either board

I was actually looking at both boards as well. The biggest difference I have seen is the Big Bang has more (6 total x16 and 1 PCI-Express x1, but it is used up by the Sound card) PCI-E slots (but no PCI) whereas the Rampage Formula only has 3 PCI-E x16 but has 2 PCI-Express x1 (and 1 PCI). The Formula looks to be better if you plan on adding in an Intel NIC like I am wanting to do, as you have the extra x1 slot for it, but I would really like to see some head to head comparisons.

According to the review it has onboard Intel Ethernet 82567V Gigabit LAN. Any advantage to having it on a separate card? Think i am going to go for it.

Would I get better Audio performance (Both quality and less CPU utilization) with this "Integrated" X-Fi 2 Chipset as opposed to some Realtek 889 or w/e most other mobos use?

Another EU review, seemed to have some crappy slow down past 215 BLK.

Then the next issue hit me, gaming performance, more specifically using the maximum BCLK I could achieve stably. The 220MHz base clock caused a large drop in performance, especially in Far Cry 2 where it was around 25%. Other games replicated the problem and to make sure it wasn't isolated to the few games I tested, I fired up Battlefield Bad Company 2. At 1920 x 1200 and 4x anti-aliasing, there was a 7 FPS drop representing a 10% performance deficit. I tried a number of ways to solve the problem, from moving the graphics card to a different slot to providing additional power using the onboard EZ-Plus but nothing worked. The only way to achieve a high overclock without affecting GPU performance was by using a BCLK of less than 216MHz. Realistically, most users will end up using a BCLK of 200MHz so this issue will only affect a small percentage of people but for a motherboard marketed for its overclocking and gaming abilities, this was a disappointing observation.

Am liking the R3F a lot.. booted right up with 930 and 6G Dominator 1600s. Ton of BIOS options, status LEDs on the motherboard (cpu, ram, etc voltages). Even the Start and Reset buttons light up. Eye candy aside its my 4th and nicest ASUS mb. Almost went with a Gigabyte U3DR but too many problems reported with that board. Sabertooth was also in the running.

CPU cooler selection is somewhat limited by the surrounding heatsinks and taller memory. Fortunately the dimm socket nearest the CPU isn't used when using only 3 sticks. If you have standard memory w/o heatsinks you should be fine. I used a Venomous-X cooler (same as Supershanks) with 120x25mm fans which just fit. Wanted a V6-GT but it would have covered 2 dimm slots. .

I'd like to hear what other cpu coolers people are fitting this board with!

The thermalright Venomous fit fine. Don't think the formula is much different to any x58 mobos in respect to CPU coolers. I'm running with 12GB g-skill Ripjaw which is fortunately low, stsndard profile RAM.

P.S. to Supershanks - EXCELLENT review, thanks!
Cheers.

Yes It's a liyyle odd just apears to be the graphics looking at the futuremark results. I found a similar dip but aty a slightly higher BCLK 218
