Looking for a new monitor coming from a 5 year old TN panel (G2400W) and this one has caught my attention. I read about the PB238Q and apparently it has cross-hatching issues. I was wondering if this one has it as well?

in the end its the same lg panel with different implementations

Personally I went for the asus because it seemed to succeed in a higher static contrast, being able to drive down to 0 brightness not loosing contrast, the joystick which is great for changing params, the inputs and usb as well as the lower price tag

As for me I just received an Asus PB248Q. But after hours in front of white background contents (internet, documents, mails..), my eyes are really tired :( And I am just at 22 of brightness and 55 of contrast.

I am wondering if I should exchange my Asus for the Eizo 2436 ? Especially for the "Eye fatigue reducer" features (EyeCare Filter, Auto Ecoview..) : http://www.eizo.com/global/products/flexscan/ev2436w/index.html#tab01
For Eyecare filter it works for a tool not compatible with the Asus. As an alternative I juste found a soft which changes the temperature during the day : http://stereopsis.com/flux/ Not really convincing..

I'm just worried about the fact PWN free is only for > 20 of brightness level, (according to some members), if it's needed to work under it.

I can confirm the AG coating is not the same. On white background I can clearly see the typical "grainy effect" on the Eizo. Whereas on the Asus it's really hard to detect. I don't know if it's linked but the texts seems paradoxically less tiring to read on the Eizo :confused: Maybe because the AG coating limit the brightness of the white backgrounds. Or because the characters appear more "thicker".

No I have to make my choice tomorrow. What I can say is if you don't like hard AG coating, don't take the Eizo.

Hi there! Some time has passed and you have probably made your decision by now. Since I am before the similar dilemma at the moment (Asus PB248Q vs Eizo EV2436WFS vs BenQ BL2411PT), I would gladly hear what was your final choice and how do you rate your monitor experience? Thanks!
 
I have been trying to figure out for some time when this monitor will be available for purchase in the US. I even talked with an Asus sales rep who couldn't give me a definitive timeline for when it would make its way to the major online retailers.
 
I bought this monitor. Overall I am pretty happy with it, no dead pixels. But I am wondering if this is a normal amount of IPS Glow? It's only really noticeable in the bottom right corner most of the time. But it gets quite annoying in dark scenes. You can even see it in a bright room to an extent. Not sure how well this will come across in these photos:

So I thought I'd write my opinion on the monitor thus far since I'm at it.

I abandoned LCD technology some 3 years ago and since then I used an EIZO T966 21" CRT and later the Sony FW900 24" CRT. Before that I had a TN Samsung SM226BW 22" LCD. I liked the 226BW back then, nothing about it particularly bothered me. I think it was a pretty good TN.

My CRT's would still serve me well to this day but they require a dark room and that's something I'm no longer willing to put up with so I decided to switch back and see if anything's changed in LCD world. Main reason however is that my FW900 broke down and I don't have the means to lug it 30 miles to the nearby town every 6 months as it breaks down and parts become increasingly more expensive plus the local authorized Sony shop does the shittiest patch-up jobs on it ever probably to guarantee that I come in again and cash out another $150 for their half-assed repair jobs.

Anyway, onto the monitor. The things I believe are quite a bit better compared to my old TN are colors. It seems a bit sharper as well. Image doesn't have a lot of tint to it and seems pretty close to 6500K and gamma seems alright too. Might be the LED backlighting but it's nice to not have to mess too much with things from the factory. So the gain is on screen size, color quality (this easily matches to my FW900) and that's the really nice aspects of it. The area where it sucks is the usual, dark scenes. The aforementioned bottom corner glow just completely kills the immersion in any kind of darker scene because it just pops out at you and it looks really, really ugly. The black level on the overall screen wouldn't be THAT bad even in a dimly lit room (I could be satisfied with it) but that bottom right corner just takes the cake with shittiness. It's not even particularly bad on my monitor, the PRAD and overclockers examples showed just the same problem so I guess it's unavoidable with this panel type. Either way coming from a CRT this is kind of the main "fist in the eye" thing when using this monitor for gaming and such.
The colors ARE quite nice though, when I look at bright colorful parts of games it actually makes me forget it's an LCD. My brain starts thinking it's a CRT that I'm looking at, until I pull up an inventory screen or something dark and then that bottom corner starts glowing through and I realise I'm still dealing with an LCD monitor with all its inherent limitations. Thus it is hard for me to immerse myself in the game. Even more so that I have to use the monitor from a greater distance than I normally would at this panel size simply to minimize that corner glow. So I am playing, but I am not "in" the game. It's hard to achieve immersion with these flaws.

Either way I guess what I am actually reviewing here is IPS tech in general as this is probably nothing particular to this monitor. I don't think I would buy an IPS display anymore, in fact I am hoping this is the last LCD I will have to buy and that the next one will be an OLED, but for the time being I will have to stick it out with the crap corner glow at the benefit of good colors and a decent panel with not too harsh anti-glare or PWM flicker. Such is the tradeoffs in life I guess. For someone who is not that sensitive about displays this will be a perfectly good monitor. I would recommend it.

But I won't be satisfied until I can open and enjoy a Mass Effect game on a nice 0.000cd/m2 black level OLED, in a perfectly dark room, watching the stars pop out of nowhere. Better hold on to those disks... it's gonna take some years for that pipe dream. Well, let's hope :p
 
There is no perfect LCD technology, it all has compromises somewhere.

Your monitor looks fine as IPS panels go. If you look at the corner head on the glow will diminish. Blacks and contrast on IPS/PLS are lower than VA but you don't get the gamma shift with VA/TN. At least with IPS/PLS you can see in dimly lit areas and the greys and blacks are distinguishable.

Keep hold of that FW900 just in case ;)
 
^True that. Shame about the corner though, because the colors are really pretty damn dope. So close to perfect yet so far away! Was playing Trackmania now and it looks quite stunning. Actually looks better than the FW900 to be honest, because my FW900 never got properly calibrated and the IPS is closer to proper color balance.

The FW900 has a neat little spot wrapped up in the corner of the attic... it'll prolly get repaired some day when I have more time/money around, if there is still parts available for it.:)
 
So there are a couple of practical problems I noticed after using this monitor for a few days.

1) To minimise the IPS glow you have to sit quite far away. Much further than I would like to sit for a panel of 24" size. At that distance it looks as big as a 22" sitting closer and smaller text becomes hard to read at that distance.
I like to have a monitor of this size just slightly further than arms distance, for proper immersion and that is the distance where my eyes converge and focus easiest, further or closer and i have to strain my eye muscles. So at this distance the IPS glow becomes more noticeable and distracting.

2) The monitor is just simply too damn bright at night, I tried to introduce some kind of bias lighting but unless I use my overhead room lighting with 3 incandescent bulbs 60W each, nothing can negate the too high brightness which cannot be further reduced below 0, which is already at 120 cd/m2. This is realistically a problem at night that causes me to experience eye fatigue and makes my eyes kinda water.
The only alternative trick to further lower the brightness is to use the contrast control, the problem with that is that it only reduces the brightness of the image, and not the backlight itself.
So now the actual image is darker, but the backlight bleed/IPS glow is still the same brightness no matter what the contrast setting, which makes it even more visible, and darker scenes lose all details and looks like a complete mess.

I'm gonna think about it another day or two, but I am likely to return it, maybe give the HP Z24I a run, who at least can be adequately dimmed.

Does anyone else experience a bit of black crush and gamma shift in the darker tones with this monitor? I've tried using a ColorMunki Display and Argyll/DispcalGUI to rectify this but it still remains. The first 2-3 squares on the Lagom black test are invisible no matter what my calibration settings are.

I have had two Z24i's. The first one had a dead pixel and dark lower corners. The second one had no dead pixels but dark lower corners... over 30% darker than the rest of the panel per a calibrated instrument. I'm following up with HP to figure out what the deal is with this monitor.

The brightness at 0% is too bright for a dark room. However, there is a "power save" feature with 5 levels of adjustment in the Management menu that shifts the entire brightness range down. So if 0% brightness isn't dark enough, set the Power Saving to 50% and the backlight will be quite dark. Not sure why they decided to do it this way, but the range is there. Lack of PWM is nice.

I think modern games are supporting 1920x1200, I will prefer to 1080p but looks like is difficult to find a good model without issues like flickering or black light bleeding
 
I got me a PB248Q, and am very happy with it. Colors are great, vivid and bright. IPS Glow is there, but not anywhere near the Dell U2414H I had (which was just terrible). Color uniformity is also good.. (I had an EIZO EV2336 which had just terrible white uniformity). Super high PWM frequency and good design connectivity.

All in all I'm really pleased and this screen is definitely a keeper.
 
Monitor research is tough!

I've owned an NEC EA231WMI for 3-4 years. I'd like to move on to something with a faster response time (the NEC is 14 ms) and better colour reproduction / black depth. When researching, the PB238Q still, for its age, seems like a strong contender (and the 248). Unless there are semi-gloss models I am overlooking - my Mom has the ASUS VG23AH, which I'm impressed with - this is it.

Do both the 238 and 248 use the same panel? It looks like an AH-IPS if so.

Are there more favourites in the 23-24" range, IPS, under $250, and with a semi-gloss surface? Matte won't bother me, but matte blacks aren't fantastic. Thanks

My needs are: movies, Internet surfing, photo editing (needs to calibrate well)
 
ASUS PB238Q and PB248Q use eIPS panels with a medium matte surface.
I don't know any semi-glossy monitors under 250$, only the AOC p2460Pxqu is in this price range and use a PLS panel and the other 1920x1200 PLS monitors are semi-glossy but I can't find any review.
 
Sorry for necroing, but I thought it would be better than making an entire new thread.

I'm interested in this monitor because I would like to browse and edit at 1920x1200.

However, I would like to game and watch movies full screen at 1920x1080. Will this screen stretch like the VS24AH or will it create black letter bars on its own? I've been looking for an answer for over an hour...
