Can anyone tell me how good the onboard audio is on the Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard? I know it won't come close to high end sound cards, but how does it compare to Realtek onboard sound and some lower end sound cards? For reference, the P5Q has a ADI® AD2000B 8-channel High Definition Audio CODEC. Thanks!

The power subsystem seems reasonably good, which could help with the noise issue on-board audio is prone to.

Codec, schmodec...what's the DAC chip? What's the S/N rating? Bah...not your fault though, and thanks for trying...Asus is just being recalcitrant about furnishing information that's actually relevant. Also, their download site continues to blow chunks - in all the years it's been up, you'd think they'd have fixed that by now. I'll have a copy of the user manual shortly, and see if it gives me enough information to make a more specific comment. (Edit: Nope, no additional info in the manual. All marketecture and fluff. :p)

Really, unless the information I see is exceptionally good or exceptionally bad, the answer is probably "fine, but could bear upgrading" like it is for most modern motherboards. It has both types of digital output, which will help if you go to an external device later.

From a quick google, you might want to know that the AD2000B is incapable of doing DTS & DDL encapsulation like some of those Realtek chips. It's some custom Analog Devices chip special for Asus, but the specs on it seem to be severely lacking. I might consider that a significant enough factor to start looking at alternatives, but it's up to you whether that matters. It's not an SQ thing, but it could be significant depending on your future plans for the system.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific. If you do end up getting that board, do please post back here with your impressions - it'll give the next guy something to search for. :D
