Asus P5E-VM HDMI + E5200 = FAIL?

I've been running my Asus P5E-VM HDMI over 6 months with an E7300 2.66GHz (10 x 266) overclocked to 3.4GHz (8.5 x 400). All I did was drop the multiplier to 8 (from 10) and bump the FSB to 400 (from 266). I didn't change voltages or anything, I just left everything on "AUTO". Now, I've gotten my hands on a cheap E5200 2.5GHz (12.5 x 200) and I wanted to try a little overclocking to see what it could do on this board. For some reason, I can't seem to get the FSB anywhere near 400, even when the multiplier is dropped all the way down to 6. The best I can do is about 360MHz.

I have a Thermalright HR-01 Plus so I know that cooling isn't the problem. I've even tried bumping the CPU voltage up to 1.3625V so I know that's not the problem either.

I'm stumped. I know the board can do 400 FSB. I've heard of people getting MUCH higher than that, in fact. Is there something I'm missing?

I'm using "AUTO". I'm not sure what I should be using.

I've been playing around with overclocking it more and the strange thing is that as long as I keep the FSB at 333, I can jack up the multipler quite a bit. I've managed to get it into windows at 11.5 x 333 (3.83GHz) and I'm prime95 torture testing it now.

I'd much rather run 9.5 x 400 if I could get that to work since it's essentially the same final clock speed but with a better memory ratio.
 
Don't have it anymore but I used an E5200 on the board for quite a while. Though now that you mention it I did run 9x333 but never had any issue at all with it.
 
the e5200 has a pretty low FSB wall. 360 is right at the limit irc. thats kinda good in a way because you can get pretty high speeds because of its high multi. you wouldnt be putting too much load on your mobo with a high FSB.

Set it to 333 because you are anyway in that range, and see if that makes any difference. It might not, though: as said before, The E5200 was not made for a high FSB. 333:400 FSB:RAM ratio isn't too shabby anyway.
