Hi I am a noob at oc and recently built a system with the following:
p5be mb rev. 1.01G
intel e6300 cpu
bfg 7600gt oce vid card
2 - 1gb sticks of Corsair xms2 twin2x1024a-6400 memory
According to reviews the components of this system are supposed to be great for overclocking. I was told one quick way to get more out of my system was to raise the cpu frequency along with the dram setting. Yet I have only been able through the bios to raise the cpu frequency no higher than 279. If it is set any higher than that the system on boot up boots for 1 second, shuts off for 5 seconds then boots. The psu is a new 500watt Ultra and should be more than enough for what I am running. So I guess I have 2 questions, the first being Is this a legit method of oc without changing other settings? The second, will the "weird" boot damage my psu or any other hardware?

Thanks for the help in advance

I haven't done this yet myself... got the pieces waiting for me to build. But if I'm not mistaken, you're OC'ing your memory if all you did was bump the FSB.

Change the divider to 1:1 (DDR2-533) and then you can probably change the FSB to 400 and run at DDR2-800 speed.

If I'm way off base, someone will correct me and I'll learn too.

Not to flame but there are so many threads about this motherbaord. Just hit the search button and type in P5BE.

But since I am typing I will say. If you dont know anything about overclocking, dont attemp to do anything on your own without knowing on what your doing. Because playing around with numbers can result in overheating, damage and void warranty.

But what you want to do is , First download TAT, the Orthos. Tat monitors core temps and Orthos you can run stress tests to make sure your overclock is stable.

But more advice hit SEARCH

Hey, I have a P5B-E that does the same thing with overclocking, it boots then shuts down and boots again then stays on. My friend has a Gigabyte motherboard that does the same thing so I don't worry about it. My FSB is at 413 and I have ran orthos stable for 8 hours at that. Don't worry about making mistakes during overclock, your computer is not going to explode, current motherboard/cpu has built in protection and are designed for overclockers.
