Hello,

I have been reading with some interest the excellent guide to overclocking in this forum. I have read in several posts on other various forums that my P5B-VM is not overclockable. I currently have a P4 3.4 ghz cpu and have been thinking of purchasing a q6600 or q6700 quad core both of which are supposed to work on this board. Am I correct in assuming that I will need a different motherboard to achieve any significant overclocking of either of these two latter cpu's? I can purchase a barebones system with a q9400 processor and ASUS P5KPL-CM Motherboard for not much more than what I have to pay for the q6700 cpu alone. I know that the latter combo are overclockable to 3.5 ghz. Even though I really don't need a new computer, would I be better off buying the latter bare bones system than a q6700 cpu for my present system?

Depends on the rest of your systems specs, what might they be?

In the end it could be smarter to buy a brand new Phenom2/Core2/i5 system then upgrade your current one.
 
Thanks for the instant reply. I assume that you agree that the P5B has problems. What is this I read about a hold back or restriction on the PCI-Ex for the P5B-VM? Yes, I agree that one of the newest processors like an I5 would be great to have, but price is a big factor for me at this time, perhaps I should give it another year or so. I want to spend as little as possible, preferably under $300, but I'm not in any rush. The Q9400 sytem I've been looking at is only $339 while the q6700 cpu can be had for under $200. What system specs are you thinking of?
P.S. I didn't realize that the Phenom2/Core2/i5 was so cheap. Can you point me to a real cheap system with that cpu?

The p5b-vm is an intergrated video motherboard the can be overclocked to about 310fsb.before you lose the nic. The Q9400 system would use the existing parts you already have and be the least expensive option for an upgrade, unless you just wanted the q6600/q6700.
If you live near a microcenter/frys electronics, you could get one of thier combos i5 (~250-300), but you will need new ram around $60 for 4gb, and possibile a videocard.
 
Yes, that's what I was thinking, it would be worth the extra few bucks to know that the cpu (q9400) is installed and tested besides getting a new mobo/ps/case. I would have the advantage that I would have another independent pc that, if I so chose, I could use as a HTPC.I would also be able to get into overclocking. It's great to be able to obtain fast PC systems so cheaply.
 
I don't know if a two-year-old thread can be brought back to life or not. I did purchase an AMD system for an HTPC back then but have just bought a q6700 for my P5B-VM. I have no idea if this board has any overclocking range or not, could someone please suggest how I get into making a very small increase in FSB just to see if it blue screens? I expect a new cpu cooler in a week or so. Right now the temps are too high with 44C at the moment just posting this message. Thanks in advance for any comments.
