Putting this as descriptive as possible... I recently ordered an Intel E8500 3.16Ghz from Newegg with a custom Heatsink and Fan(Thermaltake). I also recently bought some of Crucial's Ballistix Tracer memory (DDR2 800Mhz at 6400 stock).
On my P5B Asus motherboard, with my old processor(E6400 2.13Ghz) I had everything finely set, could mess around with ram timings and make sure that my ram was set correctly timed to what the manufacturer labeled it as.
Once I put in my E8500, the first thing that happened was normal, my Motherboard recognized a new CPU and asked if I wanted to configure it myself or set default values. Of course I didn't want to reset the timings for the ram it had before because it was the same ram and had the same timings, so I just told it to save changes and exit. Upon this action, the computer attempted to reboot, but did not post, causing me to think that the CPU was not working. I unplugged the power and let the motherboard reset itself, allowing me to reconnect to the Bios via the POST page. This time I told it to use default values and it booted fine. I did notice it said "Overclock Failed, Please place settings to default" but I am not interested in overclocking it.
Now that gives and idea of what my past 2 days have been like, but now here is the issue. Before I put the E8500 in my motherboard, my ram could be set to its correct timings and frequency (800Mhz at 6400 with the timing 4-4-4-12) and I had no issue. Now when I have my E8500 in the motherboard, it defaulted(because I told it to so I could get the machine running) to 667Mhz at 5300. I knew this wasn't right and tried to change it, but to my surprise, when I went to up the Mhz frequency to 800, it wasn't 800 anymore. It is now 833Mhz. I currently have it set to 833 at 6700, since I do not want to underclock the ram. Is this fine to do to the ram or am I risking its life-span?
Also, when I go to change the timings to 4-4-4-12, my bios reboots the computer and won't POST. I do the power cord removal and wait and replug to get the POST to return, and I get the same message that says "Overclock Failed!" The settings on the memory now(for the timings) is off of the manufacturer's presets. I tested the computer with World in Conflict today and it ran flawlessly for around 6 hours. Any idea if I am potentially harming my system? If this is fine then I'll live with it, but I usually like having all of my settings to be set correctly to the manufacturer's presets so the life-span of all my goodies is as long as intended.

Before I put in the E8500, my RAM Frequency options were 533/667/800.
After I put my E8500 in, my RAM Frequency options are 667/833/1033.
When the RAM is set to auto, it defaults to 533. I personally want my ram to run at its potential, so I put it at 833; the RAM itself is DDR2 800Mhz 6400. Is it damaging to the RAM to run it 33Mhz over its stock setting?
