Asus or Alienware

Hey guys,

I am thinking of buying a new 15's laptop for home use - daily operations, movies and some games (mostly Starcraft 2). I don't plan to move the thing around too much, so portability and battery life wouldn't be that important.

So, I am looking for a comfortable laptop with good screen and CPU/GPU, I am willing to pay around 1200 USD for it and I still can't decide which of these two machines to get.

ASUS G51J-A1
Intel Core i7-720QM, 1.6Ghz
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
500GB 7200rpm SATA II
6GB DDR3 1066Mhz SDRAM
15.6"+16:9 1920X1080 Full HD LED backlight (glossy)
nVidia GeForce GTS 360M 1GB GDDR5
$ 1250

or

Alienware M15x Laptop (2 months old, I guy that I know is selling it)
Intel Core i7-720QM Quad 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
320 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
4 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz
15.6-inch WideHD+ 1600x900 (900p) WLED
1 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M
$ 1230

What do you guys think? Which one would you pick?

the asus for sure. the resolution and video are the biggest selling point. I have a G60 and a G72 and also had an Alienware M11X. The Asus are solid. I'm thinking about a G73 myself, which is just a tad out of your budget.

I was thinking of spending $ 1150 for an alienware m11x myself, then switched to m15x or Asus. So you think that 1920X1080 Full HD LED is better than m15x's WideHD+ 1600x900 (900p) WLED?

I don't know, I am not familiar at all with the Asus brand and have this idea that m15x is more of a quality product compared to G51J-A1. I should probably read some more reviews about the ASUS G51J-A1.

Has anyone had any overheating concerns with the G5/G60?

the asus specs are clearly higher, but alianware is beast in itself. depending your budget i would go with asus. but if you've lot of money than go with alianware. but i seriously thing they are really overpriced. i like alianware myself, but after dell bought the company i don't trust it a bit (not alianware fault but dell's personal issues) and if you upgread to blu-ray reader/burner in future asus will be best for it for full HD. if you don't use it to watch movies or with external monnitor than alianware will do the job.

Asus. Alienware machines look hideous and I question Dell's quality.

They're both solid.

Get the Asus unless you can get your friend to give you a better discount on the alienware.

i never liked asus after the z71v had a horrible design causing the video card to stop working, in 2 different laptops, exact same problem

I know you're looking for 15", but you may also want to look into the ASUS G73JH models. Pretty awesome machines IMO.

Asus, most definitely, of those two machines in the OP. Slightly cheaper, 50% more RAM, bigger hard drive, etc etc... it's all right there in black and white. ;)

and the more reliable warranty buying new rather than used.

OK thanks guys. I will either get the Asus or an alienware m11x for 1050 $ in this case.

Much appreciated.

I don't know about you but I always think high end Dells are better than Asus. I had an Asus and I thought the build quality was inferior/cheap for the price.

you really cant say that about asus. they have some laptops that feel cheap. other then that they are innovators when it comes to aesthetics and design while dell contracts everyone else to make their products. asus were the first to do all of the following
use bamboo in the body
use anodized aluminum in the body
use leather (first and only)
first to create the eeepc
first to start integrating higher resolution screens
first to create and design a 3d laptop
first to offer a lamborghini branded notebook
first to create the thinnest notebook on the planet (at the time)
first to create the smallest
asus were the first of many but mostly they are first to innovate and design. dell falls far short of that.

First for a alot of things except sending me an rma in time, they were last in that race, took about 6 months to get an rma setup and sent and returned from asus, not counting the 20 or so emails from a chinese asus support lady who didnt know her arse from her elbow.

That being said, Asus do make great stuff and I dont trust anyone else for mobos, however to the OP, if you havent bought your pc yet I would strongly suggest you check out www.originpc.com, they make great pc's/laptops and will make anything to your specifications and budget, they are a company made up of all the talent that left alienware when dell bought them out.

extremely good support and for the short time they have been in business they have done admirably well and all the reviews I have read or heard from buyers have been great.

So if you havent already bought your laptop yet, go check em out and see if its something that you might like.

i totally hear you however i think it is important to say that your experience is rare and far from the norm. I deal with their rma center on a daily basis. they have alot of room for improvement however in the usa their rma center is remarkably fast unless you drag your feet. i am not asigning blame to you but it it took you 6 months to get an rma case out then you can blame everyone but asus. i have seen rarely rma take more then a month with them. in usa all you have to do is point out lemon law and they will gladly replace your laptop for a newer model in the same class.

I consider Asus much better built and a superior value. Their new G53 model coming up soon should be excellent for a gaming notebook.

I say G73, extra 2 inches and a better video card, they sell them at best buy for 1200!

Take a look at the Envy 14. Still a decent machine with the 5650 and its very O/Cable. If your goal is gaming, the M11X R2 will not be enough in my eyes. I have one with a 60GB Agility II and its a nice little machine, but it can't hang with full dual core chips. Remember the cpu in the Alienware is ULV Dual core even though it carries the I7 name.

I know this is old, but I Just never saw it.

When I had my problem, I contacted ASUS via their support system, somehow it went through to china instead of europe, the lady kept asking me to try this that and this and that, which I had already done but she wouldnt budge until I tried it again.

Now, every email I had from her took about a week to get a reply, this was official asus web support as they dont do phone support for their desktops in the uk, and their was nothing I could do about it.

I followed the support instruction and I even called asus in the UK who then promptly told me to go back to the website and get support that way.

I was then put back in touch with the same lady who then said she was forwarding my case on to ASUS reps in europe and that I should have my rma soon, this was atleast 4 months after Initial contact, asus europe never contacted me and neither did she again.

In the end, I had to call asus in the netherlands and the laptop division to get a replacement for my desktop motherboard. A very helpful lady told me she would help after I told her what I had went through even though it wasnt her dept and that she would have to contact the UK for the parts as they just didnt have them since they were laptop only, she did all the necessary stuff and even called me back and told me that she had setup an rma and to ask for my email addy so that she could send the info to me, once that was done about 2 or so weeks later I had a new mobo.

So it wasnt my fault, I told them to start with I needed an rma as the thing was dead, they wouldnt allow me to proceed until I tried her suggestions, I didnt try them as I had already done so before contacting asus to begin with, every time I contacted her she replied with something else to try rather than pony up the rma number.

So in my experience, asus were just not great and it wasnt the first time I had contacted asus for rma in the UK, the previous 2 times to that I contacted asus in the uk via phone support before they stopped that for desktop parts and both times they took about 1-2 months to send out a replacememnt motherboard fan.

A fan, a tiny little thing that could of been sent via normal post for about 50pence.

I couldnt threaten them with lemon laws as the UK hasnt got such a law, so I was at the mercy of waiting for asus, it wouldnt of taken so long had the emails between me and china not taken a week to get a reply or if she had done as I asked and put me through to european support to begin with, I replied to all of her emails the same day and sometimes within minutes of receiving them, but she replied to me the following week and she kept this up for weeks and I tried various asus phone support solutions in the meantime and was always told to do it via the web support website as they do not handle desktop part rma's.

So you cant put that shit on me and say it was my fault for "dragging my feet for 6 months", the only person dragging their feet was that china bitch who didnt have a clue wtf she was doing, unless she was deliberatly trying to take me past my warranty period which wasnt that far off.

But, saying that, even though I know their rma procedure in the uk is shite, I will still buy their mobos, as they are the only manufacturer i really trust when it comes to expensive mobos.
