I have an ASUS N73SV that decided to stop playing audio CDs a week or so ago. It had played them just fine until that point. The problem only occurs if I'm using the built-in Blu-ray/DVD-RW combo drive. As soon as I hook up an external CD/DVD drive it plays audio CDs just fine.
It also will no longer allow me to rip audio CDs using the built-in optical drive. However, when I insert an audio CD, it shows up with its proper title in Windows Explorer, Windows Media Player launches and seems to think that it is playing the CD. The time indicator counts down and the visualization plays, but no sound is produced from the speakers. If I open the volume control properties, I can see the sound meter moving as if there is something playing, but alas, no music is heard. If I go into the media library and attempt to rip the CD it just ejects.
To further troubleshoot, I installed VLC Media Player and Winamp. Both programs recognize that I have an audio CD in the drive, and both programs seem to be playing it back, but just like with Windows Media Player, there is no sound coming out of the speakers.
DVDs and Blu-rays play just fine. Audio and all. Everything works just fine with an external DVD drive. I was hoping to transfer some of my collection of audio CDs to the laptop over the weekend, but I ended up having to do it with my desktop, then map a share and copy them over to the laptop that way. Inconvenient, but not impossible.
System Restore back to before I experienced the problem did not fix it and I don't feel like re-installing the OS at this time, especially if it will not actually fix the problem. Is it possible that the internal mechanism will wear out for a specific media?
The unit is just over two years old and the warranty ran out in June. ASUS was of no particular help on the issue. They recommended that I restore it to factory condition, not that I expected anything enlightening from an OEM's tech support...
Does anyone here have any suggestions?
