Asus Matrix ROG 7970

My guess is price for this will come at USD 600 minimum. could be even more :D
 
$600 would makes sense since its similar to a MSI Lightning ($550) + a premium for Eyefinity 6
 
So is this just an adjusted dcuii card? Looks like it. And does it actually have two dual link dvi ports? Or is it like the dcuii, where both are single link, or one dp is disabled and then one of the dvi ports turns dual link?

If they both are dual link, I'm interested.
 
If we read the article, both dvi ports are dual link + 4 dp ports.

This has my attention!
 
Matrix cards are highly binned chips with manual voltage control going beyond software so I'd figure these babies will do at least 1300 minimum.

It still have the same old heatsink design as matrix 580s so kinda disappointing that Asus didn't spice it up and change the heatsink with each generation.

Isnt the MSI lightning the same way? On a lot of reviews they cannot even break 1200.
 
My Lightning has no trouble with 1300mhz. Haven't tried higher nor do I keep it at those speeds but it will do it without trouble.

That is boss, i was on the verge of ordering it on thursday with the newegg 15% off coupon but ended up getting the vortex 2 instead.(was more than $100 cheaper.)

Anybody have guesses on the clocks for the ROG? I'm thinking core 1200mhz and memory 1500-1550 mhz.

I can't speak for MSI's binning process but both my matrix platinum 580s had no issues going around 1ghz, I guess that is partly due to manual voltage control feature. My friend's lightning 580 could only reach 950mhz on air.

Matrix versions are binned cards, Matrix Platinum cards are the top of the line binned cards. I guess MSI is going with the same trend from the looks of it since they have two versions of 7970 lightnings, one at $550, and one at $600. As for 7970s I'm confident to say that most will reach 1200 easily, and often topping out at around 1250~ during the early days. 1300 on reference cards are not rare now and I'm sure these cards will easily reach that core clock.

Kinda reminds me of the early 7970 days where reviewers are getting binned samples clocking at 1300, causing everyone to think that is the general overclock and only be disappointed when their lemons only hover at around 1200, lol.

funny that you mention the Vortex. I initially ordered one of those but it artifacted at upon arrival. I opted for a flat out return because an open box Lightning popped up on the Egg for $404 as I went to the website to file for an RMA.

I jumped on that like it was my job. Glad I did cause the card arived in new condition and turned out to be a beast.

Scaring me man, its supposed to come tommorow. What did you use to test/see the artifacts.
 
I just put it in, loaded up the drivers and tried to play a game.

As soon as the game started I was getting artifacts. Desktop use was fine. Games no go. I tried a couple different drivers and even lowered the clock speed. Lowering the clock speed helped for a couple minutes but thats all. I had high hopes for the card too. I'm sure you'll be fine and that I got the less than 1% card.

I highly doubt that. That's just random speculation. I bet this has the same output connection limitations as the DCUII. The back panel config is identical.

1x Single Link DVI, and the Dual Link DVI only work's if the last display port is not used. That mean's you can't use 5x 120 Hz or 5x monitors over 1920x1200. Really stinks.

Now if they managed to pull off 4x Displayport and at least one Dual Link DVI port active when all 4x DP are active, I'd buy four of these in a heartbeat.

Yeah, unless Asus engineered a workaround, I was being overly optimistic I guess.

I'm really just looking for proper eyefinity 6 cards, ideally with 6GB to run 5 screens on... But it ain't happening apparently, plus the ongoing Multi-card driver issues really put a damper on that project unfortunately...
