I'm thinking of getting an ASUS M6N as a replacement for my desktop, plus I'll need it for school. I'll probably have it on for long periods of time (like my PC), use it for internet and word processing but mainly use for movies, music and the occasional game. The specs are below:

Intel Centrino 1.5GHz
15.4" WideScreen TFT
80GB HardDrive
512MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 64MB
DVD/CDRW
IEEE1394
USB 2.0 (4 ports)
TV-Out
Built-In 802.11b/g

The price is roughly $2200 (Canadian funds).

My main concern is that I don't know much about ASUS Notebooks. Are they reliable? Is this a good setup? Should I opt for the 1.6GHz for $88 more or the 1.7GHz for $129, or will it not make much of a difference? Do you think the price of the laptop will drop by the end of August, or will it go up?

Any other comments would be greatly appreciated!

This is an excellent notebook. Don't go for the 1.6; you won't notice the 7% performance difference. The graphics are decent (a 128MB Radeon 9600 would be nicer - but you'll still be able to play UT2004 and perhaps even Doom3 - albeit with the quality settings turned down). Battery life should be 4-5 hours.

Asus is a very reputable brand. They are the ODM, meaning that they actually design and manufacture their own notebooks. Almost all "name brand" notebooks (HP, IBM, Apple, Dell) are actually manufacturered by ODMs like Asus, Compal, or Prostar.

You might want to look at this:
<a href="http://www.powernotebooks.com/product.php?itemId=58">PowerPro M 5:6</a>

The "Ultra" model is ony $1383.52. It has a Pentium-M 1.5GHz as well, but it's a "Dothan" P-M (your Asus may have a Dothan P-M as well), meaning that it is faster. It also has faster 128MB Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics

Upgraded to 512M, a 1.7GHz P-M, and with 802.11g WiFi, it's $1788, or around $2370.

The "PowerPro M 5:6" is actually a Compal CL56. It's a very solid notebook. I just purchased a Compal CL50 (similar to the CL56 but with Radeon 9000).

using a
p-m dothan 1.7
and a radeon 9700 64mb (oc'd to 500core 500mem)
(stock was 400/400)
i'm getting 800x600 on the medium setting
or 640x480 on the high setting
with good playability

also using 1gb pc3200mem
and a 7200rpm 60gb hd

If the video is bothering you, you should be able to find the M6BNe model which is exactly the same except it has a 64mb 9700 instead of 9600...I am actually looking at this laptop myself

yes but get this

Asus M6Ne <-- notice e

1.6GHz Dothan (2MB Cache)
1GB Ram PC2700
80GB 5400RPM 8MB HD
ATi Radeon 9700 64MB

~11000 3dmarks 2001
