Hi all. Just wanted to find out what experiences you guys have had with the Asus M2NPV-VM (AM2 motherboard with on-board Geforce 6150 graphics and nForce 430 chipset). It is upgrade time and I do not the most powerful system, and prefer something which will be cool, quiet, efficient....no overclocking and no gaming (hence the integrated graphics).

Cheers,
X

I was building at least 4 systems a month with the Asus M2NPV-VM its not a bad board the southbridge gets a little warm but have not had any stability issues so far, but since Abit released the NF-M2 Nview I have switched to it, The Abit runs cooler and it has a much nicer look and layout.

i've built a couple systems with this board. haven't seen any serious problems. one reason i like it is because it fits nicely into a microfly with a ThermalRight XP-120. i need to mod the microfly slightly to get the XP-120 to fit. the mod actually seems to make the case sturdier. i do need to tie-wrap the fan to the heat sink because of a clearance issue even with the mod but it's not a big deal.

ChristO, did you do anything to cool the southbridge?

i looked at the NF-M2 but it appears as though the CPU socket is situated too far from the i/o panel to allow usage of a microfly and the XP-120.

another question for you ChristO, i need some help with the AAFP header. did you ever use it for front panel i/o? the microfly is the first case i've used with front panel headphone and mic jacks and the markings on the leads from these jacks don't correspond with the AAFP pinout. any clues you could give me would be appreciated.

I don' think the placement of the cpu socket is that much different. I went on newegg and looked at some blown up images, I can try and measure it for you when I get home and see exactly how far the cpu socket is from the edge of the motherboard, Remember though I don't think you can get RGB ouf of the Abit as well.

I used to put a cooler on the A8NVM-CSM because it was easy since the holes were there but there are none on the M2NPV so I just left it, I am not running much other than one drive, it gets seriously hot if you try running raid 5

And for the front panel audio I think I had to change something in bios to make it work its been a while I kinda forgot.

For those who have used this board, I'm just curious as to what type of memory you put on it. My inlaws want me to build them an inexpensive budget computer and I was considering this board, after anandtech.com recommended it for a budget build on their site. I had used the Chaintech VNF4/Ultra last year, when they had recommend it for an older budget build, and have been quite happy with it.

forget about the crucial memory, way over priced

i used these on the exact same board, and it worked flawlessly .....;)

well, it's easy to say my suggested ram is way over priced when you are comparing a current price to a price that i posted four months ago. ram prices have a tendency to drop fairly rapidly.

price aside, you were still comparing apples and oranges. the ram i linked to is ECC ram. the ram you linked to is not.

you will pay a premium for crucial ram (for both quality and for great customer service) but usually it is not that much of a step up.

finally, the current price on two gigs of crucial ECC ram for this motherboard is pretty reasonable (imho) at $115.99:

2GB kit (1GBx2), 240-pin DIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module
