would the mobo accept 2 x 2 gig dual chan ?

Most likely, although you should do the following
1) make sure you're running a 64bit OS - otherwise the ram is a waste
2) check the qualified vendor's list just to be safe.

ASUS' website is currently down, but Newegg's product page for that board lists compatibility with a maximum of 2GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131179

The board will probably still work with 4GB, but if possible I suggest that you see if you can borrow a 4GB kit from someone you know and test it in your board to find out for certain.

~3.25GB is still better than 2GB if he's running a 32-bit OS.

I had an m2N-sli and had no problems running 2 2gig chips. Like he said tho, you need to be runnin a 64bit OS or it will only see about 3gigs. Vista might report 4gigs installed but it only uses about 3
