Asus GL502VS - Unrealistic Expectations?

So I just snagged one of these from Amazon (1080P @ 15", GTX1070, 6700HQ) with the assumption that the GTX1070 could max most games out at 1080P. However this does not appear to be the case.

Fallout 4 - Even using FXAA, frame rates will dip into the low 40's.
GTA V - Also seeing frames in the 50's (distance scaling turned down, MSAA 2x)
Fifa 17 - Dips into the 50's
BF1 - Probably the best performing as it clings pretty well to 60 FPS, but I still get microstutter every now and then.
Witcher 3 - Microstutter as I approach towns or groups of NPC's.

In general, in addition to the low frame rates, there appears to be input lag and microstutter every now and then. I uninstalled a bunch of bloatware, and believe the bios is up-to-date, and am running the latest NVidia drivers.

Is there anyone else with this laptop that can share their experiences? I'm not sure if my expectations are unrealistic or if something is wrong. I thought the 1070 was the previous generation Titan.. which should walk all over 1080P.

Update drivers.

Remove bloatware (youtube link) - seriously the Norton trash and all the control panels they ship with is proven to cost 10-15% of your FPS. I prefer to just do a fresh install of Windows.

Check your temps and throttling, its a thin machine and also fairly low cost, its cooling solution is not the best. I had the GL702VM briefly (the 17" version) and it throttled hard after a few minutes of gaming - it also had an issue with discharging the battery while at full performance so it would shut down unexpectedly. I don't know if this affects the 15" models, but it might if you have a 180W brick.

I'd be checking temps and make sure there's none of that "game streaming" crap running in the background (Xbox software, Nvidia Experience, etc). Even the slightly "de-tuned" 1070 that goes in laptops should handle those games at 1080p just fine, unless it's throttling due to temps.

Was looking at a few reviews of this laptop, and people are definitely getting better performance with Fallout 4. Something's definitely up. Is GPU switching a thing of the past? I remember having to wrestle to keep my 970m recognized when booting up games. As far as I understand, the 6700HQ has the intel hd 530...may be a way to turn that off when gaming?

Other than that, removing all extra shit may help, as the 1070 should be a beast and crush those games.

It is Gsync enabled so it shouldn't be able to switch as far as I know, optimus is only on non-Gsync models.

Alright brief update. I did a refresh installation of windows and i'm still experiencing some slowdowns. According to afterburner the GPU isn't ever fully utilized so I'm wondering if it's a CPU bottleneck.

Is the CPU running at base frequency? How hot is it? Try using XTU to set a -150mv undervolt and see if your performance comes up.

That can be a power-saving setting as well. Make sure you're on AC and running the "high performance" profile for power management. Otherwise the CPU may be severely under-clocked.

Try again with G-Sync off. I've been through a few current laptop solutions for review. G-Sync on most definitely hurts frame rate performance for an unknown reason.

My current test is on the G752 Copper edition with a GTX 1060. I'm getting much better performance with G-Sync off and far better performance than what you're currently experiencing.

Same thing with the Acer Predator 17 with a GTX 1060.

G-Sync on and frame rate is poor. Turn it off and I personally run fast sync for amazing performance.

I've never seen anyone that says Gsync hurts performance aside from a few very rare cases where the game wasn't compatible. The general consensus is that you might lose 1-2 fps.

5 Gsync laptops from 2 GPU generations and 7 Gsync monitors later and I've never seen an issue except in Skyrim.

The last 3 laptops I have used all sufferd from it. I'll see if I can post a video demonstrating this.

Thats really wierd man, is it a specific game or all of them? I always buy the Gsync laptops if I can because I hate the Optimus in the other ones, I always get lag and stutters when it switches. My current MSI locks up for a split second every time the GPU switches.

I really only play two games. BF1 and Overwatch. BF1 will happily handle 60+ fps at 1080p on the 6700hq/GTX 1060 combo. Once I use G-Sync it hovers around 45 fps average.

For Overwatch on High default settings capped at 100fps will studder and hang at 93 fps.

Wierd, BF1 works perfect for me. Are you using the shipped drivers or did you update them? The ones on my Asus with Gsync were awful, I doubled my fps by updating.

In the G752 I'm using now with the GTX 1060 I actually removed the HDD and installed my own m.2 with a fresh copy of W10pro.

From there everything was up to date per usual.

I'll retest over the next 24 hours ☺

something must be wrong. my lenovo Y50 (i7-4770hq 860m) played everything fluently -- and from what ive read the 1070m is benchmarking very close to the desktop version.

OP, something is wrong. I have a Razer Blade with a GTX 1060 and I can max all those out no problem @ 1080p without issue.

wow this thread grew a bit. for the record i did a fresh w10 install, used DDU, but was still experiencing slowdowns. so i ended up returning the laptop and built a 1080gtx/6700k rig in a fractal mini, paired with a benq zowie xl2411.
