Hey guys,

Have an issue with my notebook that i've been trying to solve for quite some time. needless to say this has me quite baffled.

First off about 6 months ago i started to notice video playback was getting choppy at times, not to mention video games were lagging more than normal. I've tried every driver from ATI/AMD their is, nothing seems to help. Recently I lowered my screen resolution to 1280x720, law and behold video playback got better. but video games even at lower res still are quite laggy. I thought maybe the issue was my video card so I went on ebay and got a brand new AMD MXM 5870M asus card to replace what I thought was a bad video card. Sure enough, I wasted 300.00..

SO after throwing 300.00 out the stinking window,I thought perhaps its time to call in the big guns and hit the forums.
TO be honest when I set the res to 1600x900 and play games it looks like the pixels are flashing on the screen, but at the same time I get a lot of start stop like a pause while I play games and I get the same thing while watching movies as well. lower the res, seems to be better. Tried plugging in a monitor to my notebook and watch movies and play games that way. same problem.

As I said I've tried every driver that was released for the ATI/AMD Mobility 5870.. I"ve formatted reinstalled windows etc. no dice.
I noticed today when I opened HWinfo32 the Intel PCH temp is no longer showing. Could I be looking at a motherboard issue here?

Whats your opinion?
 
Have you checked CPU and GPU use and temperatures? Even with the heroic built in cooling methods of my G73j, it still gets pretty hot. Maybe you've got some throttling going on? What about your hard drive? I know that even though mine uses an Intel H55 chipset, it's not compatible with an Intel 520 series SSD and would produce the same problems you describe. Maybe your HD is experiencing problems and throwing errors?

Yeah I thought it was thermal related at first when I first discovered the issue, I repasted the GPU and CPU and my temps are great. CPU in idle is around 45c full load around 70c, GPU Idle is around 47-48 full load is 77-78c..

I'm using a SSD but not the 520 series. I have an older one the X25 160GB intel SSD. But I get the same issue even with my old Seagate Momentus XT drive as well.
Haven't gotten any BSOD's or random crashes. Wish in a way I would get a BSOD or some kind of error, would help me diag this thing.
I did run a diag on my hard drives. Short test and long test passed on both drives. Even ran memtest, booted from a CD and ran the test over night. 0 errors.

The machine itself runs fine. Just when I do anything video or video game related is when I have this issue.

Friend of mine has this same laptop... he uses it to play Total War, Comapny of Heros on it... google around there are "Special" modded drivers out there for this laptop... really made the difference... very odd build and it does seem to still have some quirks of the devil in it... If you need help with it lmk.
 
True that. Especially try the special Intel chipset drivers - my trackpad went from useless to only somewhat torturous to use. But it is a beast of a laptop, even with a somewhat obsolete 1.7 GHz i7. Tons of RAM, powerful video card, overdone cooling, two drive bays and a very nice screen. And there's almost no backpack big enough to hold it.
