ASUS EAH3870 TOP - The ASUS "TOP" branding represents ASUS' best line of overclocked out-of-box video cards, and TOP is coming to the ATI Radeon HD 3870! We'll test the new ASUS EAH3870 TOP with today's most demanding games and find out if overclocking makes a real difference in gameplay!

The ASUS EAH3870 TOP is a solid video card that is priced higher than we think it should be while offering no real world gaming benefits for the extra cash. If ASUS can bring its pricing closer to parity with similar offerings from other vendors, we think it could be a great video card. As it stands, however, this overclocked 3870 simply does not compete with a reference clocked NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB.

Great review. It's good to see an ATi product come close to an 8800GT,
The price seems to be pretty prohibitive, however. Is there a lifetime warranty on ASUS cards?

I still am not sure why anyone would buy an Asus videocard. they are always overpriced

The final question we are left with is this one, “Why the hell did we just spend time evaluating this product?”

I was wondering the same thing. There's supposed to be a price cut on the 3870's but I don't see too many that have been lowered in price, maybe a Sapphire or two. *shrug*, it's obvious that the 8800GT or even a deal on the 9600GT are the cards to get at the moment.

I think you were just trying to find something for Mark to do this last couple weeks, eh Kyle? :p

Is is just me, or are the numbers for the two ATI cards reversed? I'm seeing lower FPS across the board for the ASUS card than the stock ATI board.

They only sell because of that Asus brand name slapped on the front.

Its just amazing the crap they can release with a quality brand name on the front that will sell like crazy based on the name.

Interesting. Posting this evaluation right above the the BFGTech 9600.

I see the ATI card trouncing the 8800GT in almost every test, reason being that ATI's AA performance was bad so you had to hold back. How bad can it turn out if it's already leading by 15-40%?!

For an interesting read, you guys should check out the apples-to-apples review of a 9600GT vs a 3870 over on Anandtech (psst... they test with AA on too).

Good review guys for what you had to work with.

I'll skip the time demos and cutscene benches @ Anand.

Hmm just wondering but why are ATI cards tested with High object quality in Crysis instead of medium and NVIDIA and yet they have No Gameplay Advantages shown in the table despite you showing diffrences in the screenshots below articles ?

I'd really like to see Apples to Apples test in this case with all 3cards running so close to each other.

These OC cards are total scams, The maker never actually set any meaningful OC yet charges a large premium. It would be acceptable if they at least used 3rd party coolers yet in this case they are simply reusing the stock cooler.

I was hoping to see an overclocked HD 3870 vs overclocked 8800GT in that review.

The shader "setting" for the 8800GT in the Crysis page is missing. My guess is that it is high...but it is confusing when comparing the three tables.

What value would that serve? The point of their testing shows whether or not the card has the ability to make the next step.

This would be no different than testing breaks on a car where the test is to stop before running off a cliff. If one car fails by 10% and the next better car fails by 5%, they both fail.

And please...the 3870 doesn't run close to the 8800GT. ;)

What are you smoking and can I have some? The ATI card LOST in every test....

DEAR hardocp, im a huge user of ati graphics cards, cause, very easy, gives me more performance for the money in norway, mb not in us though, after watching prices etc.

have never ever had a ati card that have died on me, while nvidia cards have gotten broken in all direction when i was a big nvidia user.

Okey well, i can say overclocking a 3870 doesnt give any benefit at all(almost i say nothing) my benches on my comp was up 1 FPS WOOHO, while my 2900 XT was pure ownage compared, hitting well over 14k's 3dmark while 3870's overclocked max does, guess what? 12k, i got sucky cpu so take a rethought on the score a amd X2 :p

well, what i wanna say, take 3870 and take a 2900 XT, and simply, clock them :p
I think its strange that the 2900 XT gave me much improvement while the 3870 doesnt give all to much diffrence in performance i dont know why, but i wanna know why, i have sold all my 3870's except one i gave to my gf and i have sold my 2900 XT's aswell, which i ran at 1100 mhz core vs org 743.

Facts and specs about 2900 XT vs 3870, the 3870 is a faster but still slower 2900 XT, 512 bit was decreased to 256 bit, lost 30 gb/sec bandwidth there, core got up from 740 mhz to 777 mhz to compensate, and the powerconsumtion got lower, but the clocking ability went down aswell, making the 2900 XT still the bad ass gphx cards to clock, and i can asure you guys, they clock well, 1100//1200, i dont see many with 1200 mhz memory, but i ran it, it gave me improvement over 1000 which i see lots of people run vs 828.

so just take a 2900 XT i know you fellas have, if you didnt just loan it or something and the 3870. clock them and compare % improvement.
Take a nvidia card aswell, and check how much improvement a nvidia card has to offer when overclocked.

Factory overclocks is bullshit, DIY is the best way, 5 mhz isnt overclocking :p

Kyle, interesting question you ask at the end of the article.

I wonder if your time could have been better utilized doing a different kind of review. WAIT, I am not talking about benchmarking approach here ;)

I would really love to see you guys do a comprehensive review of the features of some "key" GPUs as far as features other than raw performance of games are concerned.

I have searched far and wide, and I have yet to find such a review.

Things I would love to see reviewed\discussed:
- Image quality (games\video\pictures)
- Multimonitor support (multi head support for games and others), performance\compatibility issues.
- Resolution\monitor\TV support and orientation (landscape\portrait), monitor scaling quality
- Driver features (OC\Utilities\Diagnostics\OS support)
- Other functionality (Physics\Computation, etc...)
- Warranties
- Support History

Of course, those are just some thoughts, in addition to the great stuff you usually include (performance\power usage\temps).

I guess, in essense I am looking for a kind of state of Video Card technology besides the usual key metrics.

These expensive GPUs we have are remarkable pieces of technology, let's see how they compare.

I hope you guys can do something like this, because I am sure it will required a bit of subjective comparison, and [H] is a site with the cred to do that.

Let me be the first one to say here to [H]ard|OCP, I have been around for a little while and I've seen the benchmark of the HD2900XT 512Megs but never the HD2900XT 1GB (Unless I've failed the search function) and I will personally be willing to lend it to [H]ard|OCP for some good testing on this card against the higher end cards such as the GTX and the likes. I would also point out to AtkinS that I do whole heartly agree with you with what you had to say about the card themselves.

Kyle, if you want my video card I would be more than happy to mail it out to you within the first week of February. Good day.

This is something I would like to see as well. On my own note: I know [H]ard|OCP does an interesting way of doing benchmark, I've nothing against the highest playable settings. I'm sure some of us probably would like to see an apple to apple test (uncanned benchmark) so some may accurately compare one against one other on the exactly same settings. Just a thought.

Its with the Physics, they merged the two.

What do you mean they have no gameplay advantages shown in the table? They are right in the image.

Maybe you should take another look at the settings and fps. The 8800gt is running higher resolution and / or AA in all of the tests, which is why it has lower fps.

Interesting. Posting this evaluation right above the the BFGTech 9600.

What do you mean? They always put the newest evaluations on top of the latest review/featured section.

It does in HardOcp testing :D
How am I supposed to know how much impact those two or three changes in IQ settings have ?
For me it can just as well be set randomly on the whim of testers.

So Crysis, CoD4 and UT3 are the standards for game benchmarks on the [H] now? No other game or genre is acceptable for being used as a benchmark, is every other site wrong for using a broader selection of games?

Another great review. Two comments:

I like the way [H]ard is doing the reviews. One things I'd like to see added. I'd love to see the comparison cards preformance at the same settings as the card that is being reviewed AS WELL AS the highest "playable" settings like ya'll are currently showing.

I know [H]ard doesn't use the time-demos that other sites use. How much variation do you get when running the same card through at the same settings multiple times?

Honestly if there are 20 benchmarks they give I'll only look at 2 or 3 of them. While I enjoy the "e-peen"ness of synthetics they simply don't translate into real world numbers. I'm glad I don't have to sift through the it gets 200fps at max settings on CS:S benchmarks. I wouldn't mind 4-5 but I'm more than happy with 3.

If you don't know what AA and AF do at certain settings, or have a good idea, you have no business buying that expensive of a card. PLUS< they SHOW you in the IQ samples, below the article.

The Asus cards come with a 3yr warranty, which is better than the Sapphire 1 year warranty and the reason I bought the standard asus model.

Would I ever buy this top model hell no, I can get the same clocks out of my stock card with the same cooler!

Does the 3870 lose to the GT hell yes, even overclocked hell yes. News anyone doesn't know already?

Where you been living under a rock!

”
The final question we are left with is this one, “Why the hell did we just spend time evaluating this product?”

So people like my brother don't go out and buy it. If you are against recommending a card I wouldn't think of recommending it to a family member of mine. Period.

They only sell because of that Asus brand name slapped on the front.

Its just amazing the crap they can release with a quality brand name on the front that will sell like crazy based on the name.

3870 doesn't need an asus sticker to sell, it is a good card, but Asus over priced it.

it isnt crap.

testing a 2900XT 1G over a 512 prob wont make much diff, same as an 8800GT 512 vs 1G, the diff just isnt there to make up the price diff, a 2900XT 1G card was a marketing ploy for those who thought more ram would make the card better where it failed miserably.

I never suggested that they use synthtic benchmarks only a larger selection of genres, like they use todo.

I wouldn't mind seeing more games. But I'd rather see them review 10 cards on 3 games than 3 cards on 10 games.
