So, Asus has put out a text on their ROG website regarding the recently announced 1440p IPS 120+ Hz monitor with Adaptive Sync enabled(per AMD, via pcper.com).

What's interesting to me is right at the end:

  • PG = premium gaming (ROG)
  • MG = mainstream-performance gaming
  • VG = value gaming

Their new IPS display will be at 144 Hz, as they are finalising it, it will have support for AS. Yet it is still being sold as "mainstream" while their TN panel, the notorious ROG Swift, is being sold as "premium".

Presumably this means, or should mean, that this IPS panel must cost less than their "premium" TN panel. Otherwise Asus has just made a bizarre situation even weirder.

The tiers are based on their features and pricing scheme. The MG279Q has objectively fewer features than the PG278Q and costs less.

Are you claiming that Adaptive-sync is inherently inferior to G-sync, that TN is inherently better than IPS, or am I missing something?

It's nice, but I'm not sure it's worth the loss of multiple inputs, even before you consider that it's mutually exclusive with the G-sync functionality.
 
Well if they think it is mainstream and price it as such then that can only be a good thing, even if a 120hz IPS is obviously better than a 144hz TN screen I am not going to argue with them.

No. To use your example, Adaptive-sync doesn't cost the manufacturer anything and is part of DisplayPort. G-sync is a FPGA module that is added in that takes over the display's scalar and needs to be calibrated for that specific display, which costs more.

Strobing can be done over any input because it is a feature of the monitor that is controlled by the monitor's board. G-sync, however, is locked to DisplayPort currently because it is the only interface that has enough bandwidth.

I can't say whether or not different panels have different costs these days. But more pixels = more diodes = less tolerance to electrical variation = more cost in manufacturing. Considering both panels are the same resolution and nearly the same refresh rate, I would say the difference in cost is purely due to G-sync.

Regardless of your brand alliances, the PG278Q has more features than the upcoming MG279Q and costs more due to the addition of G-sync. As I said, the naming scheme is purely down to features and pricing, which comes from ASUS' own mouth. Which one is better "quality" is the subjective opinion of the consumer.

I think we're mostly in agreement on principle, but you keep saying "features" when it sounds like you mean "component costs". The question of the hour is whether Adaptive-sync monitors can offer substantially identical features/value to the customer at vastly lower component and final product prices.

The G-SYNC 4K IPS is counterpart to the G-SYNC TN. My guess is they know who they're targeting. If you're in the sweet spot where non-strobed, 40 hz lower limit, 120 hz IPS for $600 is good enough for you, then all the better. It's not exactly cheap for "mainstream".
