Asus auto tuning?

So i've been out of the PC scene for a while but finally decided to build a new computer.

I remember overclocking my E4500 to 3.2 ghz, going into the bios and adjusting the fsb speed and the voltages until i found the highest possible stable speed with the lowest voltage.

For my new pc i got a z8 mobo with a core i5 2500k. I was looking to overclock and found an auto tuning feature on the asus software, it brought my cpu to 4.2 ghz.

Is this doing everything right? are there any advantages to going in and overclocking it myself?
 
Advantages would be getting the highest overclock possible for the lowest voltage possible. The auto tuning software doesn't really optimize the overclock, and usually pumps in more voltage than is necessary.
 
Try turning off the auto function and just set the multiplier to 42 and see if that is stable. If it is, then you could always try like 44 or 45 or something.

Perfectly said. If you take shortcuts, then the only thing you're really shorting is yourself.
 
The bad thing about a lot of the auto-tuning software is that is also increases the base clock, which can cause weird problems. If you don't want to do too much messing about, you can always leave the voltages to Auto, and just set the overclock frequency by hand. That is usually acceptable up to 4.5 or so - the Auto voltage is usually higher than you would need if you did it manually, but it is in the ballpark. It really depends how much you want to get into it - although to be honest, with SB there really isn't much to get into any more.
