Hi Folks,

I am the owner of an Asus ARES 2. I manage to install it and everything is running fine. At first I did not bother to do some benchmark, I did not have time... But, I recently try to play Burnout Paradise and everything was so slow... I previously have a 7970Ghz ROG and was happy with it.

So I decided to run some benchmark... Be ready to laugh... 3Dmark11 gives me an overall score of P2986 (graphics 2812 and physics 8747). I try numerous time to improve it, remove drivers, reset, config... The only test I still did not manage to do is to make a clean install of windows...

Here is my config :
Asus Maximus V Formula
Intel Xeon E3-1290v2
32Gb ram
Asus Ares 2
Samsung SSD 840 500Gb
DELL 3007WFP (2560*1600)

I notice something strange during the tests... GPUz show me that one of the 7970 is running at full speed ALL the time (1100/1750) and the other one is always switching between max and min freq, even when I do nothing on the computer...

At this point I do not know what to do. I try numerous different drivers and get the same results.

Anyone have and idea ?

Cheers,

Sergio

i forget to include it in the list...
Seasonic M12 II 750w.

By the way, before my ROG 7970Ghz, I had a 7990 devil 13 and everything was perfectly working, the same setup. I change it because of the coil noise... And if I remember correctly, both of the gpu were idle at the same time. On the Ares, on of them is at max always. Strange.

I test using the latest drivers and the lastest beta drivers. I also try the one included in the GPU package.

I have one last test to do is to do a fresh windows 7 install with the latest drivers... Bit it is a pain !

As long as the PSU is OK, it should be fine. That's a good PSU.

Hi Folks !

Some news from my problem using Asus ARES 2. As I made several new tests, I update it.

Quick reminder. My setup is composed of :
- Asus Formula V
- Xeon E3 1290v2
- 32Gb ram
- SSD Samsung 840 500Go
- Lian Li PC-V750
- DELL 3007WFP (2560*1600)
- Asus ARES 2
- Windows 7 Pro 64

I also have the following card :
- Asus MATRIX 7970
- VTX 7990

My computer is not overclocked. The CPU is running natively at 4.1Ghz using the default setup (one core).

I did not have any problem installing and using the Asus ARES 2 at first. After one week I decide to play Burnout Paradise (a not so recent game). With the Asus MATRIX 7970 I did not have any problem to run it at native resolution and with all graphics option.
With the ARES 2 I immediately notice some lags and the game crashed... I decided to run some benchmark and installed 3DMARK11.

Fasten you seatbelt... My score was around P3000 !!!! I managed to desactivate ULPS and change the default value for anisotropy and so on, but still not the right value !!!!
I must precise that, at first, I made the test using the lastest available drivers. Everything was always by default, I did not made any O/C (I do not do that anymore...). As my Windows was not a clean install, I decided to take a new Samsung 840 500Go and fresh install Windows 7 Pro 64 on it.

I also install the latest beta drivers (13.8), the ethernet driver and that's all (I need to have access to Internet in order to have a score for 3DMARK11).

I get the same poor result.

After desinstalling the drivers using the official AMD tools (or reinstalling Windows, it gaves the same results...), I decided to swap my Asus ARES 2 with the VTX 7990. I do not use it because of the coil noise but was happy to have another 7990 around...
The results were quite differents... Now I get around P14000 with everything default. I get the correct score !

To put it simply, I do not understand what happened. I try to remove all bias in my tests , and thus made several fresh install of Windows and ATI drivers, I still get the same results.

Do I miss something ? Is my card dead ? Except this benchmark problem, everything runs fine.

I really need help on this one ;)
