ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Problem

I have a problem with my A7N8X board. I just got back to school from my break and plugged in my computer (my computer was sitting unplugged and covered with a sheet over the whole break) and I found I had problems. First I couldn't get into Windows. Right when it got to the Windows XP screen with the thermometer bar.. the thermometer bar would go once and then you'd see a split second of the blue screen of death and then it would restart. I finally formatted and I can get into windows now.

My problem now:
I have an AMD Barton 3000+ and now my computer is only reading it as a 1300+. It should work at 200mhz and a 15 multiplier and I set it in the bios but it doesnt seem to do anything. Another thing is whenever you exit the bios, it seems to restart but the screen goes black. It also does this when you restart it from windows. What I have been doing to get it to work is just hold the power button till it turns off and then turn it on again. For a while the bios wasn't even saving my settings that I changed to it so I might be dealing with a low or dead battery. Windows seems to be working fine and everything is installing properly and I'm on the internet and all.

Pretty much my only two problems now is:
1. My CPU speed isn't being read correctly (it can't be a jumper problem because it worked fine before I left school and I or noone else has touched the inside of the case since then).
2. My computer doesnt seem to be restarting right whenever I tell it to.

If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. I really need to get this resolved.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to a response.

Your problem would be that a 3000+ CPU doesn't run at 3.0ghz. Set the right multiplier, lol.

Have your tried reseting the CMOS? If not - that may be a ligcal next step. - It is also possible that your CMOS battery has died. You should purchase a replacement battery to test that variable.

Let me know if this helps.

Ok, well first off the name 3000+ doesn't mean it runs at 3.0Ghz, infact it is really running at 2.25Ghz. The name "Speedhere"+ comes from a naming system the AMD uses to make fun of the fact that their processors perform at the same of an Intel. So, if you have 3000+, your 2.25Ghz system runs like a P4 3Ghz system would (for the most part...)

There are many things that could have caused this. I have the same board as you, so this should be an easy fix. First of all, I would suggest resetting your BIOS. If you take a look at your motherboard, there are 2 jumpers by your CMOS battery. You are going to want to take the jump on the side of the batter (not the one slightly lower then the battery) and move it to possition 2. Leave it like that for a few seconds, and then put it back to the original position before booting up the system again. (if you need more info check your manual)

Second, upon booting up your system go into the BIOS and change your clock. After the CMOS reset chances are you chip will be running in Fail-Safe mode, meaning it will be detected as a 1100Mhz processor. What you are going to do is change the frequency to 166, and then the multiplier to either 13, or 13.5. I beleive it is 13.5, but other sites I've read say to go with 13, so I would start there, and then if it still doesn't show up as a 3000+, go with 13.5

That should pretty well fix that problem. As for the non-restart, I don't understand really what you are trying to explain. Perhaps your computer is just not in the mode where it shuts off on its own, I think it's called "Advanced Power Management" but don't quote me on that part.

Hope that helps you.

Did what you said.. it restarts now properly and when I right click my computer it says AMD Athlon 2.25ghz. But I remember before it use to say something like AMD Athlon XP 3000+.. is there a reason its not showing the 3000+?

as long as its running at the proper speed, who cares what winblows says?

download wcpuid or cpuz and check if everything is proper

Actually, that seems to be common. I've had it happen to my board a few times. I'm not exactly sure why it does that.

Mainly, the Firmware on your motherboard has speed listings with naming information. That is how your computer tells you what chip you have running. At startup, when it tells you the chip name, it usually says something like "AMD Athlon 2500+" or 3000+ in your case. For me, when I overclock my 2500+, some times it says 3000+ or 3200+ depending on how fast the CPU is running. The name doesn't really mean anything, as long as the speed is equal to that of a 3000+ you aren't losing any performance.
