I just swapped out my HIS 5770 (950/1400) for this 6850. Im playing WoW at 1080i on an Asus 24" LCD. I can't really complain about this framerates staying in one spot in Dal, but as soon as i spin the camera or my character at all I dip into sub 5fps making the game unplayable. Thinking it was just the city I went down below same issue. 60FPS in one spot, as soon as i move the camera or my character around 5fps. Just wondering if anyone else was having issues or not. My 5770 did not have this issue. Im running an e5400@3.4 and 4gb ddr3 1600 on a g43 chipset.

edit: all settings maxed with vsync on and triple buffering off

Have you checked to make sure you didnt turn on supersampling in the CCC? I made that mistake making the jump to my 6850 and it kills FPS.

turn off all your addons, see if the problem still happens.

I couldn't find "supersampling" but all my settings are set to performance over quality, also yes I tried with all addons off and its the same thing.

is you hdd choking while this is happening?

The supersampling is under the AA mode, if you have it on performance you are not using super. When I first got my card I had everything on quality, that's when I noticed super was on.

Is there a program or a way I could check usage, because this is what it "feels" like but i thought wasnt possible since it was a simple video card swap. I did have to move sata cables to different ports and they may be smashed underneath the card.

Did you uninstall your Catalyst driver before swapping, and reinstall the newest driver?

It sounds like you also upped your video settings in WoW? I wouldn't think that a 5770 could run WoW maxed in Dalarian?

No the settings are the same, its not just dalaran, in crystalsong i get 60fps with the camera in 1 spot. If I move the camera 5 degrees or my character it dips to about 5fps. Moving around/strafing(normal play) is unplayable.

I had the EXACT same issue when I updated my drivers to 10.1 and 10.2. Roll back your drivers and it will fix it.

Three biggest factors that will drop FPS in WoW:

- Shadow quality (in-game setting)
- Transparency anti-aliasing, namely supersampling (video card setting; try multisampling)
- Terrain distance slider (in-game setting)

Adjust these settings.

Sounds like your running out of texture ram, causing you to hit your HDD to load textures. Thats why it happens when you swing the camera - thats when it needs to load the new textures. Id do a complete driver uninstall -> reinstall and then delete your wow pref folder to reset pref and set them back to what you have now.

you can run wow on ultra settings with a fast 512mb card, it can't be running out of texture ram on a 1gb enough to drop the game to 5 fps.

I agree it sounds wierd, but thats exactly what his issue sounds like. Thats why I told to uninstall his drivers and delete his wow preferences, something seems to have messed up somewhere.

I mean WOW can easily use over 1gb texture ram but online in Dalaran, not running around a zone.

Thanks for all the help guys. I am going to start by uninstalling my drivers and trying the current ones again, and then ill try rolling back. The key thing here is I have all the settings at the same place as I had them on my 5770(maxed everything, vsync on triple buffering off) and performance is now much WORSE. It also starts right away as soon as I load the game. As always it takes awhile for textures to load but its not like this happens over a period its immediate and constant. I was already using 10.2 or whatever on my 5770 I believe, I had just updated them before I recieved this card. I will also try looking at the hard drive and my Sata connectors and cables because these are the only things I changed. I didn't have 90 degree cables and the 6850 went right over the ports so I forced it in probably bending the cables a little. Ill get back to everyone, system is as follows:
ASUS P5G43T-M
E5400@3.4ghz
4gb Cas7 Gskill ddr3 1600
Earthwatts EA-380D
Asus 6850
Seagate ST3250410AS 250GB 16m cache Sata 3.0

Going to need to run latest to support 6850. Might wanna try 10.10d hotfix from today. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1559392

Also, you stated you did not reinstall drivers when you swapped cards, big no no with ATI cards. Reinstall the 10.10d hotfix drivers, I bet that fixes it.

Ok I lied, I ran a HD tune Bench to show you guys first. Ive never looked at hard drive performance before so maybe you guys could give me some feedback. It looked a little spiky to me and no I wasnt doing anything else during this and no programs were doing anything. I know this drive sucks, ill be buying an SSD very soon. I'm getting to the real work now ill be back...

Thats normal if you are testing the drive your OS is on. Spikes are just apps or services in the background.

Looks perfectly normal. Try the 10.10d reinstall with the hot fix. If that fails, you might want to consider deleting the entire WoW folder, then start with the new 4.0 streaming client. You can get up and running in about 5 minutes, it pulls in game files as it needs them, and will let you play very quickly.

If it works, you can just start the client and let it rip to download the whole game overnight. WoW doesn't do the patch -> patch -> patch -> patch -> patch updated anymore, it just brings in newer files when needed.

Well I need to kill this thread for now. Its now artifacting at stock speeds in WoW. maybe I got a bad chip, im going to try some more games but it's not looking good. Ive cleaned and reinstalled drivers, rolled back etc. now artifacts on the splash and loading screen in WoW as well as in game. Im going to mess with it a little bit longer then pop my 5770 back in and RMA. Thanks for all the help guys.

It may be a bad card. When I first got the 470 GTX I had frame rate issues and artifacts. Worse FPS than my previous card the 275 GTX. I went back to Best Buy, got it replaced, problems went away.

Thanks for all the help guys. I put my 5770 back in and i can spin the camera as fast as I can move the mouse and there is no framerate drop. It is a 100x improvement from even when the 6850 didn't artifact. Im declaring the 6850 officially bricked. Thanks again

There seem to be a lot of bugged 6850/6870 threads (More than usual for a new card).
I hope it's because the cards are just insanely popular, and not because they have higher-than-average failure rates...

Yeah Im really in a debate on what to do. If my PSU wasn't a EA380 id be getting a GTX 460. I think I'd be borderline with that PSU.

Could the issue be power related? Long have you had that earthwatts ea-380d?

An overclocked proc like your could pull 140 watts or more by itself. 6850s require quite a bit of power when fully loaded

I bought the PSU in June. The 6850 started with just a framerate issue and after a day started artifacting badly at stock speeds (it does clean up with a big overvolt with the included Asus utility). Theres no indication that its being underpowered. I don't have any better psu's to test with but that PSU should be plenty of power IMO. Also the WoW loading/splash screen wouldn't put a load on the CPU to cause that type of power draw, where it artifacts terribly. Temps are still normal. 47c idle 57c load 74F ambient temp. Fan was forced to 100% for all 3d testing.

That PSU is fairly new but at only 380 watts it's suspect. it's no average 380 watts, probably why the card is running but with an overvolt on the videocard, an overvolt and overclock on your processor, I'd suggest you test with another Power supply of good quality. I know you dont want to hear that right now but at least keep it in the back of your mind if you keep troubleshooting and still can't narrow down the issue.

Want to add that my issues with my first GTX 470 was in WoW.

And yea, that power supply is highly suspect. Can you exchange the card?

I already processed the RMA. I don't have another psu, and Ive run plenty of systems with weak psus and this one has no signs of that. If I had a bigger one id try it but I don't so Ill be getting another 6850 most likely after my RMA goes through. My processor is not overvolted and is under virtually no load on the login screen for WoW. Sorry I just don't think it has any signs of being a PSU problem, if it was under any kind of load I could see it possibly.

edit: Just realized the people that were pointing at my PSU are running high end Nvidia GTX cards :)

Your PSU is way below the recommended wattage for your system. Skimping on a PSU is one of the worst things you could possibly do because if something goes wrong there it effects the whole system. And I don't own a Nvidia card.

You are foolish to not immediately suspect the PSU as being the primary culprit here. It might not be, but that's hardly a reason to lay the blame on the video card. I am ATI and NV owner, and fan of both, so I'm another person you can't push partisan bs on.

Damn dude this is the kind of shit I hate seeing, Why make a thread if your gonna spit in the face of those who come to help you.

Just because I have a GTX 280 doesn't mean i'd send you on some kind of unnecessary journey to troubleshoot something that can't possibly be the issue. I consider myself well known on these forums. I give tech advice without discrimination. I have a extensive tech background and would never let one brand cloud my integrity to the degree you are accusing me of.

Fact is, a 380 watt power supply is about 50-70 watts under what a 6850 is recommended to have with a setup like yours. Moreover I doubt you got your processor to 3.4 from 2.5 without bumping your voltage up, regardless of what stepping you may have.

I feel bad for whatever manufacturer you bought that card from, they'll probably get it and test it and guess what, it might be fine. But because you refused to acknowledge your failure in getting a proper PSU to handle your setup you make it their problem at their expense.

I'll be unsubscribing to your thread. If you have anything to say to me try PM.

Agree with the others, that PSU is pushing it.
Should have noticed it sooner.

A quality 380W PSU is more than enough for all single GPU cards, except GTX 480 and maybe 470/285. That doesn't mean, though, that this particular unit couldn't be defective in some way.

Sensitive much? Make sure you stomp on his sand castle before you leave.

OP, your PSU is more than adequate for your setup, these other people have no clue what they're talking about. However, sometimes a botched driver install can cause artifacts, and it's not the fault of the hardware. Since you already processed your RMA, when you get the new card back make sure to do a clean driver install. That is, uninstall the old drivers, reboot into safe mode and run Driver Sweeper, power down, swap cards, boot up, install the latest Cats. Hopefully all goes well this time.

He has an antec power supply so I used antec.

Do you think he might be using more than 90% of that 380Watt PSU? I was a bit generous with the fields E.G. he's probably using a aftermarket cooler which could use another 10-15 watts for his CPU. There could also be other factors that we dont know about either. I chose a pretty standard setup and a 5830 because the power draw is very similar to 6850.

If his draw was 350 watts It'd be close. However it's probably more like 400 watts.

Okay now I'm really unsubscribing from this thread, can't believe I forgot before, not taking it out on you Meeho but I had to post this before we get a speculation war going on such as what this nub wrote

etc.

Actual power that PSU has to deliver is 80-90% of those values.

Your average power draw for a 5830 from your measurements that your providing is 288w and average for 6850 is 265W. That's a difference of 23 watts. Subtract 23 watts from 393 watts power consumption I provided with a 5830 and you have 370Watts.

You do realize he has 4gb DDR 3 ram, Sata hdd, at least 1 optical drive, case fans, and a overclocked CPU to push with that power supply dont you? You can't just reference the video card when considering the power supply. His whole system is pulling somewhere between 370-400watts. That is more than 90% from the total output capability(380) of his PSU. That's far to dangerous of a zone to be in even on a 5 month old power supply. A safe zone would be at or less than 342Watts for that PSU.

BTW I'm not subd anymore but just saw that someone posted ;)

I understand you defending you point but the fact is you posted on speculation not facts. Pick your poison and post back. choose any one of these and see for yourself, Hell pick your own if you want
