As the title stated. We are looking at a proposal that would have us put hardware on the floor to replace our current OCR and cost recovery systems and integrate them into a single package. I built the original OCR box that is currently back there (phenom II x4 box) and it has worked excellent for our needs. However the issue is that we can't repurpose it as it needs to be a shut this one down and boot the new box up with no downtime kinda thing.
anyway. I'm not sure what is out there currently that would be good for this application, from previous work in this area I know we don't need full on server grade, and these programs love both cores and decent clockspeeds, so my thought early on is building a gaming/encoding machine and then leaving out the discrete video. just wanna get some thoughts of people who have built more recent systems than myself.
Really just need an idea of where to be looking chipset wise. Thuban crossed my mind but is sort of a dead end now. Bulldozer feels like I might not be getting value for money quite yet. I only have a 2500k at home so not sure how the intel lineup stacks up otherwise (and when it comes to core based stuff my 1100t tends to equal or beat the gf's 2500k).
aside from that currently thinking a decent efficiency psu, 8gb ram, and a fast platter drive. either sas or a velociraptor. Being an 24/7 I don't want to mess with consumer level ssd and enterprise ones are a bit out of the scope for this.
any thoughts are welcome, i'm still poking around at benches and pricing... but some feeback would be welcome.
