After pre-loading and then installing Assasin's Creed via Steam, I must say, i am very impressed.
I was rather skiddish after the performance debacles I have experienced with other console-pc ported games (Lost Planet, Shadowrun, GoW etc...) that seemed to be terribly inneficient. Especially cosnidering this might be the first game that requires a dual-core cpu.

However, I must say, that despite being newer, Assasin's Creed runs better on my system than GoW. Smoother animation, better detail and lighting even.
If this is what we can expect from truly multithreaded games, then I don'tmind ported games, or higher requirements. The experience has been very good.

My only complaint is that some of the mechanisms of the game are definitely console-based. For example, I don't like having to guess where I will land when I jump off of a building. Nor do I like targeting bad guys. Now luckily that last oneis optional, but I would have liked to pin-point where my landings would be as opposed to guessing or being 'snapped' into diving into some hay.

I find myself just running over the rooftops of Damascus for fun, beating on guards more than I am doing the quests. lol. I haven't like a 'sandbox' type game since GTA:SA.

I have my suspicions that Assassin's Creed runs on the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter graphics engine, though quite modified, and probably post-GRAW2. In any case, I should have some good information on it soon.

Yeah, if they can only have a save and exit to windows function that'd be great.

I cant get this game to work. I suspect it doesnt like my EMU 0404 as the sound is messed up. The problem seems to be leaking into the actual performance of the game as well. It runs fine until there are alot of people on screen like in the tutorial. Dont see why it would be a video issue though as Im using current drivers for everythingand some good hardware. Sucks...

It does take that many steps, but i find just closing it right away works too, lol.

Dang, that is one crappy save+exit requirment. I learned the hard way just a few minutes ago

figure its going to be a buggy console port, hopefully the graphics and gameplay make up for it.

I'm pretty sure the Schimitar engine is proprietary and not based on the GRAW one even though some people have said the graphics bear some resemblance, I do not see it.

Ok here's what I think...
Graphics are actually kick ass...it looks really nice and all.
However, I find the gameplay (controls) to be very annoying.
I had played it on 360 at a friend's and I really really enjoyed it.
When I downloaded it on PC *caugh* I thought, cool, a great game, but now I can also use keyboard + mouse controls!!

yeah :(, it wasn't well done, the controls didn't feel right...
I don't know, I might wait for the full retail version to come out and be reviewed, so I can perhaps give it another chance...

I seriously can't stop lol'ing..... thats impressive

It is. And it's ridiculous. It's an awesome game and I don't think it's a bad port but it has a few nagging little issues like that convoluted save and exit setup that just shouldn't be.

I'm using KBM for this and I picked the keyboard and mouse with 5 setups, remapped a couple of buttons, and I've been perfectly happy with it. Do some experimenting folks and I think you'll be happy.

I have to say that the UI is possibly the worst I have run into...and I have FoW which is just horrible....

The UI doesn't bother me, but the mushiness of the Kb&M interface does. Plus, it seems like the mouse just doesn't have enough buttons for the game. Especially considering the high/low profile button.

I actually use the Xbox360 controller for PC. Works very well, and since accuracy is NOT an issue in this game, it does not suffer as a result.
The only weird thing was when I first plugged it in, the colored buttons on screen did not align with the buttons on the controller, they were rotated around the four buttons one button to the left.
Remapped, problem solved.

Anyone tried it on their notebook yet? I'm going to see if I can pick it up today and will post back on how it runs on my G1S.

^ Runs great on my system at 1080p (everything at 3/3). No slow downs at all.

I'm running it at 1650*1050, everything 3/3 except mulisampling & shadows on 2/3, getting a solid 30 to 60 fps.
Game looks good and runs like charm.

Multisampling at 2/3. Everythign else maxed. 1280X1024. Slik as silk.

I actually prefer the KB+Mouse combo in this game. It took a little tweaking of keys to get it comfortable, but I like the accuracy of the mouse when I'm running for my life on rooftops. It's much more fluid once you get used to it. I have played the game on the 360 and the ability to jump and do a 90 degree turn to immediately to line up your next jump just isn't possible on a pad.

I'm playing on Vista 64 bit and in the in-game options the Multi-Sampling option is greyed out...it it set to 1 (out of 3)...I cannot access that option

after looking around online looks like you cannot access AA at high resolutions with this game...I currently have the resolution set to 1600 x 1200@85 Hz...as a test I went back in and set the resolution to 1440 x 900 and the Multi-sampling option became available again (not greyed out anymore)...so it looks like setting the resolution to 1600 x 1200 or higher will result in the loss of AA

hopefully Nvidia and/or Ubisoft will remedy this in a new patch or driver update

Why oh why do I purchase console ports? Every single time I'm disappointed. Mine is greyed out as well (1920x1200), so I suppose I'll have to wait for a patch.

P.S. Ubisoft sucks kthx.

Anyone care to comment on performance?
I'm running it at 1600x1200, max settings on the rig below.
Looks decent & runs smoothly, no crashes, slowdowns, etc. to mention.
I get some jagged shadow edges occasionally that stand out oddly.

Err, sig isn't showing for some reason?
I can see it set in the user cp.
Anyway, Antec 900, ABit IP35, E4500@3ghz stock fan, 4gb GSkill DDR800, BFG8800GTS512, 23" Sony Trinitron CRT.

Playing at 1680x1050 on the system in my signature (the one with the 8800GTS 320MB). No performance issues that I can detected with every setting maxed out (yes, even AA and population density all the way up).

I'm extremely impressed at how well the game performs considering some older PC titles don't even play this well on modern hardware (Oblivion anyone?)

I was noticing the same thing. I think this game really does take full advantage of multi cores. Even when running FRAPS recordings, which usually kills my fps, it's running maxed at 60fps, which is the max I set for FRAPS.

So guys, I was curious to see if it would run on my outdated PC, so I installed it. With the system in my sig, it runs at 800x600 with EVERYTHING to the lowest. Looks like crap though hehe.

If you cannot change multisampling maybe your AA/AF settings in your driver is not set to application controlled?

I'm running all highest settings with 3/3 multisampling, 1680x1050 (i have black bars) 30-50 fps or so. video card is at stock 600/1800.

Just installed the game and huh? Why am I forced to use widescreen on 1280x1024? Is there a way to change the config to make it fullscreen?

It uses 16:9 so you will get the black widecreen bars. It looks a bit pants when half the screen is black but after a while you don't notice it much. Even 16:10 resolutions have black bars but the bars are much smaller than a 4:3 screen.

The main problelm I'm having is customising the keyboard - mouse controls. I can't seem to change them, just move the current mapping around but not create any new ones.

Yeah the black bars are very annoying, was the same with Condemned dammit.

The EMU cards really arn't the best for gaming. What I do with my EMU 1212m is I will run optical out of my motherboards onboard sound and into the EMU's optical in. I then set the onboard for default for games so it uses the better driver interface of the onboard and the better SQ output of the 1212m. I then set apps that can handle the 1212m to use it in their settings.

Had some Audigy issues but updated to latest drivers and that disappeared. Looks and plays great now.
