My brother's PC just crapped out for no reason. It was working fine when he was at college. He drove 5 hours through Ohio, got home, plugged it in, and when he went to turn it on, all the lights and fans powered up for half a second and then immediately powered down. Then, everytime we pushed the power button after that, nothing would happen.

So we unplugged it and plugged it back in. Pushed the power button...everything turned on for a split second and then shut back down. lather rinse repeat.

So my friend suggested to "re-build" it (just take everything out and put it back in). My brother didn't want me to completely dismantle it, so I just took out the RAM and unplugged all the molex connectors and then put everything back in the way it was.

Now nothing happens when I push the power button. The green light on the mobo turns on when I plugged the PSU in, but that's it. So if the mobo is getting power to turn the green light on when I plug the psu in, is the psu completely dead?

p.s. when I was cleaning out the tower, I found a little twisty-tie sitting on the mobo under some wires. Some of the metal on the twisty-tie was exposed, touching the mobo (i'm pretty sure). Bad?

thanks.

It could be the PSU or the motherboard.
I'd recommend getting a $15 PSU tester to see if the power is delivered across all rails.

Does the fan on the PSU start?

You can check by wiring pin 14 and 15 on the main 20/24 pin cable without it being plugged into anything else and see if it powers up. If not the PSU is dead.

Stop being lazy and reseat every component and power connection in the machine.

Then again you could take this as an opportunity to replace one of the worst power supplies ever made.

Yeah, the other night I just completely dismantled it and put it back together.

my brother called aspire and they told him to do the wiring thing with pins 14 and 15 to 20/24.

yeah, the psu is dead. so he's paying 20 bucks for a replacement.

thanks everyone.

apparently, it's going to be a different model of a 550w power supply, because they don't make the model that he had anymore (i wonder why?)

also, he (and I) are very broke, so that's basically all he can afford. barely.

I forgot your bro is in college. ;) I'll be there in a year. :(

Have your brother at least get a PSU from a reputable company like Enermax, Antec(decent), Xclio, etc.

Get something of quality instead of some "cheap" model, because that is what he is going to be getting, something cheap and will probably will blow up.
