I am planning to update my computer in the near future. I was curious if I should get a new 965BE C3 stepping (my present processor is a 955BE C2 stepping) or I should wait for the new 6 core AMD processor to come out.
I like to use my computer for videogaming and some video transcoding work.

Thank you!

I'd say wait. The new C3 stepping is a better overclocker, but the C2's aren't bad. You might get 100-200Mhz more headroom, but I don't think it's worth buying a new processor, unless you can sell your current one for a nice price. I'm anxiously awaiting Thuban myself, as long as it can clock as high as the current Phenom IIs. It should be able to hold me over till Bulldozer is released...

+1 for that....whoulda thrown a vote in if you had the 6 core option in it:rolleyes:

but ya, wait a short while for the 6 cores and get that, not worth buying a 965 or 955 C3, when you have a 955 already, your performance jump wont be very high in real world usage

Yeah I should have thrown an option for the six core in the poll. My mistake! :)

I suggest waiting ontill after 25th. AMD is too release some new CPU by then.

Why would you even consider that when your current processor is at stock speed? Overclock that chip!

WHy ?? simply because the C2 stepping chips are not the best overclockers....he might get a 900 MHz increase(which is nothing to sneeze at), but with a C3 stepping he can get 4 GHz with decent cooling with ease.......add in that he can sell the 955 C2 to someone on the boards to make up for most of the cost of a C3 stepping....

That makes no sense at all. 900mhz + 3.2ghz on the 955be is over 4ghz but yet you say he can get 4ghz with the c3 stepping (which is actually less of an overclock because the 965 is 3.4ghz as opposed to the 955 which is 3.2). What I think you meant is that the 955 usually overclocks to about 3.8ghz (but I've seen many people with 4.0). Even then, there is no noticeable difference between 3.8ghz on a 955be and 4ghz on a 965be other than the $25 price difference.

The answer is I would not get too much of a change in performance. I am tempted to go to the 955/965 C3 stepping because of its lower power use, ram spec increase to ddr1333 (I have ddr1600 installed) and greater overclocking potential.

I just upgraded from a 955BE C2 to a 965BE C3. I only did it because I sold my system for a very good price. Keep what you have (unless you can sell it for a good price) and wait for the upcoming 6 core procs from AMD.

sorry i had a typo, meant 600 MHz, thanks for catching it ....both the C3 steppings should get above 4 GHz, giving noticeable difference over 3.8 GHz, then again this is all if the OP would be overclocking....if not, then it is a pointless debate, and in the end he should ultimately wait until later this year when AMD launches the 6 core chips
