ASIMO Avoids Moving Obstacles

That guy moving the marker all the time made me feel bad for the robot. Every time the guy in the video moved the objective marker, I secretly wished ASIMO would whip out a gun and shoot him like a good T800 would.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to be the guy moving the blue dot around when ASIMO has a chain gun. "Don't piss off the armed robot".

Someone needs to mock up this video with an armed ASIMO. Better yet a "fully armed and operational ASIMO". :D

That is pretty cool...apply the technology to cruise control and we have auto pilot.

bipedal humanoid robots still freak the shit out of me, but the technology is pretty damn impressive.

Looks to me like this was all done with a seperate computer, basicly turning the robot into a Radio Controlled Toy. If this could be done completly internally i think it would then be worht while, as it is now its basicly a bunch of hype.

poor asimo, people always making you perform...on the other hand, somebody better kill that thing before it gets us.

well this one doesn't look like as big a waste of time as the earlier ASIMO robots but I'm still not impressed. The path finding is pretty cool but with the technology we have I don't understand why robots aren't way ahead of where they are now. In my mind the biggest obstacle should be the power plant and how to get that power to do what you want.

Unfortunately I don't have any skill in any area that is involved in making a robot so mostly I'm just spewing crap.

You'd be surprised at how complicated something as "simple" as bipedal motion is. Walking is a fine balancing act consisting of constantly "falling forward" and recovering, and it takes a lot of fine muscle control to do properly. Running is also very different from walking, even though our brains automatically take care of it.

There's only one awesom-o and its cartman!

Great, so they're teaching robots how to avoid moving objects like, say, BULLETS!?

Wonderful, just wonderful.

I felt the same way. I was thinking to myself, wow what an asshole. :D

I suppose ASIMO isn't in the uncanny valley much if I'm feeling sorry for a robot.

Hell yeah! Put a jet-pack and some guns on that little bastard and set em loose! :D

Ever see the bigdog?? http://www.bostondynamics.com/robot_bigdog.html This one's impressed me ever since I first saw it. Very lifelike limb manipulation when they tried kicking it over and when it walked over some ice. Making it semi-autonomous would really just be a matter of giving it gps coordinates to follow. If only it didn't sound like a giant killer mosquito.

god i want the robot to just strangle the guy that keeping the blue dot away

Why can we have intelligent pathfinding for ROBOTS but not for freaking RTS games!?!?

Boston Dynamics is light years ahead of Honda.

wow that is impressive. The part where the guy kicks it is awesome.

skynet and at-st walkers here we come............we are doomed i tell ya doomed!!!!

ASIMO outsmarts a lot of people in my town. In under a year, four people walked out in front of slow moving buses and got ran into/over. You can still see the red spots if you look closely, but one of the incidents looked like the victim had melded into the bus, like left a deep imprint of herself in the glass and the front? It was weird!

These four incidents happened at the same spot on lengthy old downdown streets, open only to business traffic, taxis and buses, with wide open views, that only demand from a pedestrian crossing that they look before jumping out into the road.

Looking will protect you from the terrible secret of traffic safety.

I think it's quite impressive that the robot calculates its path and makes through, at least if working correctly.

I will not say that the BigDog is not impressive, it is, it really is! However I would not say that based on that they they are light years ahead of Honda. The two platforms are completely different and impossible to make a fair comparison against.

4 Legs are easier than 2 just as 2 are easier than 1. Also the joint system is different and they aren't going for foot articulation.

I think BigDog is great and I'd love to see what they could do if scaled up to a horse size! I also enjoy the pack mover that was featured on Secrete Weapons (and they used a 360 controller in the manual mode!)

In addition to what the guy above said you also have to look at (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) that ASIMO is autonomous, it is deciding on it's own where to go and when to do it in real time. Big dog is just set to go, it's making blalance adjustments based on the terrain, but it isn't making real time adjustments about where to go. Two different concepts.
