i was just wondering if that AS5 thermal paste can be used when attaching a heatsink (or a fan, etc.) to a northbridge on a mobo. I am talking specifically about the abit NF7-S v2. Is it even needed between the heatsink and NB chip?

YES it can and should be used! Whenever a heatsink is going to be implemented, there must be a TIM between it and the source of heat for the most efficient exchange of heat. Even if both surfaces are lapped to a mirror-freaking-finish, it still has microscopic pockets of air that actually insulates the heat from transferring to the heatsink. Technically, not even TIM's are anywhere near as good as direct heat-source surface to heatsink metal contact, but TIMs are designed to squish into those pockets of air and provide much better heat exchange.
