as5 or stock cooling pad

i just got an opteron 146(cabye 0540) and ive been using the stock hsf and the thermal pad that came with it. temps are good(idling at 27C right now.) I'm debating whether disassembling and applying as5 will be worth the trouble. Note i already have the as5, i just didnt have it the day i got the mobo and processor.

Surely, someone is gonna come on here saying how significantly your temperatures will drop with the application of AS5. The truth is you'll see maybe a 2-3 drop if you're lucky. Considering you're idleing @ 27C, reapplying it would be completely pointless.

thats pretty much what i thought. im not going to bother overclocking the processor seriously until i get a decent pair of ram.

I'd only replace the thing if I was looking for lower noise (ie. an aftermarket solution) or ease of cleanup in the future. The thermal pads that AMD uses now is actually pretty good.

Thats funny, the 146 that I got had thermal paste applied to the heatsink, not a thermal pad. In any case, AS5 would only be worth if youre really trying to squeeze some extra mhz out of that proc so once you start to overclock I would recommend re-applying.

yeah im sure you're right. temps are going down quite a bit since day 1, now idling at ~21-22C(my case is on its side and open though.)

Why is that? Everyone knows that all you need is ram that will do 200mhz. Running ram 1:1 is pointless and too damn expensive. And unless you drop a ton of cash for a gig of ram that will do 275mhz
with tight timings, all you're doing is lilmiting your cpu oc.

ive got 1 stick of 512mb that is rated at pc2700 and refuses to run at it, and another stick of pc2700 that will run it. both are just generic ram from my old system. when i oc'ed the system at first it was very unstable and would boot, even at 2.2ghz(10%.) when i moved one stick to slot 3(so slot 1 and 3 are occupied) i've had alot more luck oc'ing it, but i havent tried to go beyond the 2.2 yet.

Stock pad is fine for stock cooling but really, why not apply the AS-5 if you have it? It takes jsut a few minutes and costs next to nothing per application. Just my 2 cents.

I'm trying to see what i can do without having to go through with the extra effort at this time(i plan to get a new hsf around or after xmas.)

So i've been over clocking the opteron, following the guide in the amd forums. for step one(ht link @ 2x, cpu multi @ 5x, and ram divider @ "100mhz 1:2" i was able to push the HTT up to 290mhz stable. When i put it to 293mhz, the system locked up. So I went and reset everything to stock. I began step two of the oc guide in the amd forums(standard settings, prime95 with small fft, increasing HTT every minute by 2-3mhz) but its locking up @ 235mhz, but doesn't show any errors at the frequencies approaching it.

Sorry, I "assumed" you had ddr400 ram (see what happens when you assume.....makes an Ass out of U and Me). But for future reference.....dont's spend the loot on ultra platinum gold xtreme jigabit memory. Good ol' 3200 with decent timings is all ya need.

As odd as that seems, it might be the highest you can go w/stock voltage. Try upping vcore a notch and try again.
