I had been having some heat issues lately with my processor, so I took my heatsink (Zalman 7000Al-cu) and cleaned off the AS5 on the processor and the heatsink and reapplied the AS5 and put it all back together. The first half hour or so I had my computer on, my temps were reading 40C, but after awhile they jumped down to 35C idle and sat there for the remainder of the day. I left my computer on last night, defragging my hard drives, and when I woke up, it was off, and my drives never finished their defrag. I know there wasn't a power outage or anything last night, either. Anyway, I checked my temperature this morning and now I'm sitting at 47C idle.
I realize how inaccurate motherboard temperature readings can be, but it doesn't explain the erratic change in temperature. Nothing else inside my computer has changed, so something is wrong with either the AS5 or my heatsink. While I had the heatsink off, I did notice some scratches on the surface (I have no idea how they got there, either), but they were on the edges.
What could be going on? I was going to try reapplying the AS5 again today, but if that doesn't work, I was going to buy a new heatsink and see if that's the problem. The heatsink looks fine except for the few nicks on the surface, though. The fan spins fine, and is reporting the same RPM as always. The method I'm using to apply the AS5 is to put a dot in the middle and then rest the heatsink on it, turning it a few degrees left and right after it's on. The very first time I did it, I used something to spread it over the processor.
I'm just looking for insight as to what could be causing this. And again, I do know how off Motherboard readings can be, but there was a huge change in the temperature. Also, my computer went off for some reason, and I have to assume it was because of heat.
