AS5 Applying on DualCore

heat is coming from the same place, no difference in thermal paste application...

Just use the IHS instructions from that page (steps 9/10) unless you're going to be removing the heatspreader.

If AS5 is the paste you are using, apply a small bead (about the size of a grain of rice) to the CPU and install the HSF.

AMD actually recommends using a dab of compound equal to 4-5 grains of rice on their IHS processors. I guess you could spit the difference at 2.5... :)

Safety factor, they'd prefer you use too much over too little.

The last time I spoke to AMD,they told me AS5 voids warranty. And when I asked what do if I swap mobos. Then he wasnt sure.. lol :D

I would NOT use that much. 1 grain of rice size is sufficient. Too much compound will ruin your temps.

AS5 voids warranties on non-heatspreader cpus for obvious reasons... I suspect they just didn't re-write their policy for the Athlon64s. Besides, as long as you don't slop the stuff around, you can clean it off a heatspreader well enough.

The interface material shouldn't cause a failure with your cpu regardless... unless you're overclocking, which voids the warranty anyway.

I'm surprised CPU manufacturers don't just install a "overclock protection" chip in their cores... something that would have to be bypassed to run at non-standard speeds (maybe through the bios?) and would be an indication of a voided warranty.

This isn't a far-out concept... modern cell-phones have imbedded moisture dectectors because warranty fraud with "swimming cels" became too frequent.

No. You need to remove the IHS and find where the cores are. You then need to recap the CPU and put two rice-sized grains of compound where the cores are. If you can't remember then just drill two small holes and...nevermind. :p

Yeah, those instructions will work fine.

Yea, i've I applied it a bit differently. I put down a tiny tiny bit on the IHS and a tiny tiny bit on the Heatsink surface. I spread it around the entire area of both. I then whiped it all off.
Then I basicaly followed the instructions. Tiny bit on the proc put the heatsink on. Twisted it a lil bit.
Temps are much better than they were but then again that may be due to the fact I directed the airflow from the HSF down toward the proc. I still have the strange readings I had before though.

Before my opteron was at 288x9 and it would idle 50 .. 52ish. Then underfull load on both cores it would only go up to 52 .. 54.

Now at the same clock its 36, 37 idle, and 38 underload......... My fan is not being adjusted by the mobo as its a 4 pin. WIERDDDDWERWIEIREDDD
