As usual, I hate Creative.

Alrighty, I just bought an X-Fi Platinum, and I'm having some issues. I'm running XP 64bit so I got tthe X64 driver package and got everything running.

Now I'm starting to have issues. First, I can't get the stupid remote to work. Do I need a special program or what?

Second, I installed their XFi patch for UTK4 and now it blue screens and reboots the second I open it. I haven't been able catch what it says.

Third, I hard locked a second ago and I had to reboot.

Any suggestions?

I've had a fair share of problems with Creative's updates. If you created a Restore Point before you installed the patch, I'd just revert. If not, you may be facing a reinstall unless you can find some way to clean the modifications that were made.

It's a long shot, but uninstall the X-Fi drivers and software and try to clean up any remnants of them as best you can, then reinstall the drivers only and work your way up from there. If the UT patch modifies UT, uninstall UT, wipe its directories and start over.

Honestly, with things as they are, I wouldn't bother attempting to install the UT patch again. I've had Creative driver updates completely hose my Windows install before, so my advice is to always install as little Creative stuff as humanly possible. The less you install, the better the odds that something won't corrupt your entire operating system (let alone your games).

I hate Creative's software division with a passion. Makes me want to go troll their boards.

Hmm, I keep getting Machine Check Exception blue screens. Perhaps the card is mechanically defective.

EDIT: I nuked everything Creative on my system with their utility, and reinstalled the drivers. Hopefully this fixes the Blue Screen issue.

I would say there is your first and foremost problem.

What need do you have for running a 64-bit OS? That is to say, what non-OS 64-bit apps do you rely on? If the answer is none, go back to XP Pro SP2. The software is more mature and stable.

BTW, there is no specific 64-bit driver package for the X-Fi. It is the same as the package you download for Windows XP Service Pack 2, but it supports both Windows XP Service Pack 2 and x64 Edition. However, only the driver is supported in x64 Edition. The DVD-Audio player and other multimedia apps are not supported, which is most likely why your remote doesn't work. FYI, you have to have the "Creative Entertainment Center" installed to respond to your remote control (which uses the DVD-Audio player for multimedia playback) which is located on the retail driver disc, not on the website. The web driver package alone will not respond to your remote control.

..and I'm sure UT2k4 doesn't play well with 64-bit video or sound drivers either, given its age. It simply wasn't coded for 64-bit systems.

I would really not lay all the hate/blame on Creative for your problems in this instance.

I seem to remember UT2k4 being one of the first games with a 64-bit version.

A 64-bit compatible patch was released after AMD 64-bit processors became mainstream but before Windows XP x64 Edition was released. It was by no means designed for operating systems that did not yet exist, and a quick Google search of benchmark tests will reveal to anyone that the performance of the 64-bit "version" of UT2k4 (as well as Far Cry, the other '1st game to support 64-bit') is actually marginally lower than 32-bit when run on 64-bit OSs available to us today.

BUT Windows XP 64 bit is officially supported by Creative, is it not?

In the web driver package, x64 Edition is officially supported by Creative, yes... but not the multimedia applications. Don't take my word for it, read the disclaimers and README files, as anyone should do thoroughly before installing any web updated driver.

Except for the fact that they advirtize support for X64.

After running their driver cleaner app things seem to be doing a lot better, no blue screens, but it looks like I won't have my remote working any time soon.

Also I don't have an extra 100$ for XP 32bit and the 8 hours it takes to get everything running as a like it again.

Besides Volume and few minor uses, the Remote Control is almost useless. It's meant to work with a Creative App that's similar to MCE, it's cheesey as hell.

If you would like to use the remote and creative's software does not want to play nicely with x64, I'd check into Intelliremote. It's donationware software but if you can get by with having 5 useless buttons on your remote it may be what you need.

While it's not the same card: my Audigy 4 Pro has been astonishingly well-behaved under XP/x64. A couple of isolated lockups here and there, literally, in well over a year and five or six different system installations. Note, though, that I don't give a damn about Creative's remote or multimedia applications--I'd much rather not have the bloatware installed, period.
