AS 5 on laptop cpu?

I'm planning on upgrading my laptop cpu and I know that it is a easy installation.

laptop is V3205 (AKA SI1520), do you guys think that putting AS5 is bad in any way on laptop cpu?
 
I would think it is semi-bad, because you run the risk of having the AS5 spill onto the motherboard and shorting things out. If you're careful though, it shouldn't be a problem.

A less risky method is to use Arctic Ceramique. It performs as well/better than AS5, and it is non-conductive. There's also lots of other non-conductive thermal grease out there, but Arctic Ceramique is the most widely known and one of the cheapest.

There should be no problem with "spilling" unless you are putting ungodly amounts of TIM in the chip. Also, AS5 is far better (in TIM terms) than Ceramique, also AS5 is NOT electrically conductive.

Really? From what I've seen online, the Ceramique is about equal to the AS5 if not slightly better.
 
AS5 is essentially nonconductive. Don't worry about a little spillage from time to time. You can actually do more damage trying to excessively clean it up than will result from it just sitting there.
 
Or you can go with Arctic MX-2 which is completely non-capacitive and electrically non-conductive and as good (reviews show it always within a degree +/- ) as Artic silver 5. Once I switched I never went back, I have used it on CPUs and GPUs. Plus it last longer than AS 5 and has very little break-in time.
 
I use AS5 and Shin Etsu on many laptop hsf and never ever had a problem occur for the last 7 years.

I put that on my laptop 3yrs ago. Worked great and lowered temps significantly.

As far as the whole AS5 vs MX-2, ect I've used both and honestly there wasn't any tangible difference between the two temps-wise. I was really disappointed after hearing how much "better" MX-2 is.
 
I would certainly put something on it. AS5 is no longer top dog though. Not by a long shot. Get one of the better products out there now.

Not completely true. AS5 is still a great choice for smooth or lapped surfaces, the temp change you see from TIM to TIM in most cases have to do with the TIM's consistency and the mating surfaces of the HS/CPU. The better the mating surfaces the better the thinner TIM's do. I have also not seen any trustworthy reviews that show AS5 outside of the top 5, even with all the new TIM's on the market.
 
AS5 is capacitative, and Arctic Silver recommended not letting it get onto any other components. This should only be a concern if you have a tendency to apply far, far too much TIM, which is bad application practice in the first place. I have applied AS5 to my CPU, an Xbox 360's CPU and GPU, and a 7900GS without any ill effects.

In short: the conductive vs. not debate is blown out of proportion, just use common sense in putting it on.
 
I put AS5 on my laptop ~2 yrs ago.. never looked back - recommended. that or MX-2 :)
 
yeah dude, i use AS5 for my 2 laptops and i have no problem with it
 
i put some AS5 on my dell laptop about a year ago. nothing bad happened yet:)

I've seen reviews where AS5 is better than Ceramique and as good as Zalman STG-1, I've seen this one where Ceramique beats both. Well, I just looked at the GPU page, and AS5 beat them all. So it's all back and forth, back and forth. I definitely agree with general trends, like 'ICD7 and MX-3 tend to be the best from empirical data', but beyond that, I take them with a grain of salt.

Use what you got, enjoy it. If you don't have thermal paste, and would like a large quantity, I might recommend a 22g tube of Ceramique here. And if you want high quality for a low price I would recommend Arctic Silver Matrix, it's re-badged TIM Consultants 0098, which is comparable in performance to OCZ Freeze. LOL I can't believe I just wrote all this, whatever enjoy all.

EDIT: And the best thing to get period outside of Indigo Extreme and Liquid Pro is Shin-Etsu X23-7783D. It kicks ass, $6 on eBay.

Which was my point, the reason every site has different results from each TIM is because of how thick or thin the TIM is and how rough and flat the mating surfaces of the CPU/HS are, each TIM will perform different on a rough (but flat) finished base, and the same for flat vs convex bases etc etc. But the general trend is the smoother and flatter the base of the HS and IHS of the CPU are, the better the thinner TIM's will perform.

Just about all the aftermarket TIM's are great, though some do shine and from reviews and my own testing, there are a few that stand above them all, however, you are not going to find one that will beat all the others in all cases, and it's often best to stick with the ones you have, or the ones that are easier for you to buy, or are cheaper in your area. But if you are looking for every last .1C you can get, then your only option is to buy one of each and try it out and see which performs best on your setup.
