Hi guys, I just purchased a Antec SLK3700AMB

SP-94 alone with the Tornado 92mm fan, plus some Artic Silver 5 to cool down my PC a little, I have read the instruction for artic silver, but i still have some question might need you guys to enlighten me.

now i have the stock heatsink with the p4 socket 478 cpu, i took it off today and looked at it, it has those black pads that were originally on the heatsink, it has melted a little on the CPU too,

1. how do i get those stuff off the CPU? can i use a nail buffer and then use acetone to clean it? what is the best way to remove them?
2. after i clean the cpu, i just apply a thin layer on the SP-94 right? do i have to clean it then apply again like on the instruction?
3. i should just apply a little bit in the center of the cpu and let the heatsink do the pressure?

I also have the ATI 9800 Pro, how do i apply the AS5 on that too? thank you!!!
 
Everyone seems to have their own method of applying TIM, or thermal paste. Quick answers to your questions:
1) Acetone will cut most residues and oils. Do your best to keep acetone only on the processor. It is highly volatile and will evaporate readily.

2) All surfaces should be made as clean as possible before applying TIM. Yes, clean the surface of the heatsink with acetone. Coffee filters are good for wiping, since they don't leave any lint. You could apply TIM according to the Arctic Silver website, or you could put it on the processor (what I do).

3) I would suggest the use of a credit card to act as a spreader for the TIM. (Others use a finger wrapped in a sandwich bag). Apply the TIM (a dab about the size of a grain of rice would be about right for a surface area like the P4) and then use the credit card to spread this around on the proc, ending with a smooth, thin film covering the entire thing. Razorblades (those big, industrial jobs) also work well.

The GPU on the 9800PRO is basically like the core on any processor. The application of TIM is identical, only you won't need as much.
 
I dont really bother spreading it out on a P4, i leave it to the pressure of the HSF hold down to cause the TIM to spread itself...not sure if this is ok or not but i havnt had any problems doing it like this.
 
ive tried both spreading it around and putting a drop and letting the heatsink smush it, and i got 1 degree LESS with the drop method. it doesnt feel right, but it works
