If this is the wrong form for it my bad.

I just pulled the trigger on my build and was thinking about how I should apply AS5. The AS5 website says to make a horizontal line over the quad core and then mount the HS and give it a small turn. But I also heard that you should just make a small dot in the center of the CPU and then mount the HS. I also heard that you should make the small dot and then spread it around.

My question is what is the right way to apply AS5.

Listen to the AS5 website. There are different methods depending on the type of chip/core you have.

This is where they tell you how to apply it to the quad core but is this quad core the same as what they are talking about on the AS5 site? I'm not sure if my quad has the heat spreader or not.

Sorry for the noob question, I just don't wanna do it wrong and fry out my quad core and MoBo.

AS5 is a pretty thick paste and on quite a few heatsinks I have found it hardly spreads at all.
If the surface of the heatsink and the surface of the chip are not very flat, it will not have decent pressure over the whole surface and wont spread
Couple that with some heatsinks dont exert a lot of pressure onto the core and it makes for a terrible thermal paste.

My advice is use more paste to be sure or take it apart to see if that was enough paste.
If it was, do the same again, if not, apply more paste.

Be VERY careful not to get AS5 on anything that is an electrical connection as it can kill components.
I refuse to use AS5 now after killing a graphics cards memory.
Buy some Arctic MX-2 paste, its much thinner, is electrically safe and conducts heat better too, you wont look back :)
