Hi All: Building a new rig next monday. Should use the Atric Cooling Freezer Pro PWM HS pre-applied paste? It already has Artic MX-2 thermal paste. Did a quick research & it seems like decent stuff. I purchased an AMD 970 Phenom X4 3.5GHz CPU. Would like to reach 4.0Ghz-4.1Ghz with o/c.

Any insight?

Thanks All!

MX2 is good a good TIM, but sometimes the pre-applied paste is too thick.
I changed the stock thick application of Shin-Etsu on my H50 for a thin application of MX-2 (my cpu is lapped), and my temps dropped by 2-3*C, a substantial drop.

You should be just fine with the stock stuff though, even if its too thick.

If you're OCing it then i'd change it.

Personally, I'd change it either way because I figure it's easier to just change it now and know it will most likely be good for another year or so as opposed to not changing it and possibly needing to clean/reapply in 6 months or so.

Nm, I see in your signature you already have that heatsink.

I do not think you can reach 4.0-4.1 with a c3 phenom with that heatsink, the heat will be too excessive. My experience was that heatsink will hit a wall around 3.9.

Guys...I would like to thank all of you for your insight. HS/TIM is not something I'm all that fimilar with. QuiteSufficient: I'm going to keep my Artic Cooling Freezer Pro PWM. Just so you know...I'm keeping my old AC Freezer Pro 7 for my current (soon to a back-up) Intel e8400 set up. The Pro PWM is slightly different that it's for AMD MB's & I purchased that new 6 months ago (still in it's box) I'll try my best to get to @ least 4.0GHz on the set up. If not, maybe the Corsair H50 might be an option.

I went ahead & purcashed some if this Shin-Etsu X23-7783D paste here:

Spent like 45 minutes this morning poking around (before work) & it seems like this paste is very good stuff. Thanks again for everyone's help! I really appreciate it! Heatsink noobie over here!

PS: As a few posters mentioned....It's easier just to clean-off the pre-apply now & install somethhing else. Is anyone fimilar with Shin-Etsu X23?

Guys...I decided to "ditch" my Artic Cooling scenario (going on eBay) I had a $50.00 Best Buy Gift Card (via my credit card) & went with a Corsair H50. Picked it up @ my local BB & waiting for the rest of my parts to arrive. I'm sure now I'll be able to get 4.1GHz-4.2Ghz on my new AMD 970. Seems like the AC Freezer Pro is a decent cooler, but not an o/c like it use to be.
