Too bad Ars didn't use a more mainstream CPU for the test configuration. Testing with an E6300-level Core 2 or X2 6000+ would have been more interesting for CPU utilization.

Umm, the article's point was to test video card assisted decoding. Why would they need to try different processors? Decoding of hi-def video is quite linear with clock speed, so it's quite simple to figure out how the other core 2 duo's will do.

Not really. x% of the work is done on the video card and y% of the work is done on the CPU. Decreasing only the CPU speed does not necessarily increase the CPU utilization in a linear way. The load on the CPU between processors on a dual core isn't equal either. Performing the test on mainstream processors like I suggested gives more useful information for the bulk of users.

If you remember back 3 years or so when HD acceleration first came out, you could remember how (non-MPEG-2) HD playback was completely unusable for many people, while it worked fine for others with the same card. e.g. bad framerates at 100% CPU utilization for some, and 30-40% utilization for others with the same video card, both with single core CPUs.

In case it still doesn't make sense, Ars used the fastest dual core CPU available to test CPU utilization. Most people don't have that CPU or anything close to it.

Agreed, all they proved was that their cpu could handle the job on its own. They should have used a weak cpu or at least downclocked it to show how a cheap cpu that would struggle with HD content fairs with HD decoding gpus.
 
Also kind of lame that they only tested at 720p that was being played on a 1680x1050 screen...
