pc gets new mobo, ASROCK K78SXE, athlon 2400, 2x 512mb DDR 400 Kingston.

the pc runs great!

brown out...pc gets toasted. won't boot up.

1. what UPS device do you recommend?
2. powering up I hear 4 beeps. hd spins but does not go into bios. blank screen. what's wrong with the system?
3. replaced mobo with ASROCK K7V88 RAID. needs a 4 pin square ATX cable. won't boot up at all. i hear the hd spinning but no beeps, no bios, no screen. nothing!

running an anted 300w power supply.

where's my problem?
1. cpu?
2. mobo?
3. mem?
4. power supply?

what can I do to isolate the problem? :( :( :(
 
all i can find is that four beeps for ami bios means:
Timer Not Operational Timer 1 is not functioning (also caused by error in base memory)

giving a hdd power spins it up, the only exception i have found is sata, they wont spin up untill they are plugged into the controller
 
Looks like a memory issue. You might have blown the stick in the first bank. Here's some info:

Try running single channel with the stick from the second bank only. I also would run memtest if you can get that far. Memtest 86+
 
If you've got a new mb and it has the 4-pin power connector on the board as well as the standard ATX connector, you have a couple options. Get a new PSU that has that 4-pin power connector. OR. Get an adapter that goes from a standard 4-pin molex drive connector to the square 4-pin connector on the board.

The connector in question (if I'm thinking of the right one) has 2x12v lines and 2xGround lines. Used to also be known as the P4 power connector since the Intel P4's started using it a long time ago. Many boards use it now and won't boot up without it.

As far as UPS are concerned...we've used APC at work for years. They used to be the standard for our company, but not recently we've stopped using them.

My personal opinion on them is that they're decent UPS'. However, don't expect the batteries in them to last more than 2-3 years if constantly plugged in and providing a load. They have sealed lead-acid batteries which degrade over time and finally die. When the battery dies, you may as well buy a new UPS b/c the batteries will cost you almost as much as a new unit (unless you can use a 12v marine deep cycle on them...never tried though).
