Areca lists this on their website/manual:

One 240-pin DIMM socket for 2GB(default) DDR3-1866, 1RX8, ECC module
- up to 4GB or 8GB DDR3-1866, 1RX8,
Unbuffered/Registered ECC module or
- up to 4GB or 8GB DDR3-1600, 2RX8,
Unbuffered/ Registered ECC module

I'm unable to lacate DDR3-1866 1RX8 Unbuffered/Registered ECC anywhere.

I could only find 1RX4 or 2RX8.

Did they make a mistake? Where do they get that memory from?

I plan on buying this card and wanted to put in the fastest cache ram possible, but it seems like I'll have to settle for DDR3-1600 2RX8 Unbuffered ECC which is widely available.

I do not believe the speed difference of the cache will be noticeable at all between DDR3 1600 and DDR3 1866.
 
Possibly, especially when 1600 is run at CAS 11 and 1866 at CAS 13. Which I would expect these two to run at.

Then again, if they offer it as a choice then maybe there is some little benefit. And if there is benefit, as an enthusiast, you go for it :) (provided price difference is not very large/acceptable)

Another argument in favor of 1866 is that the default cache dimm is 1866.
 
I asked Areca support if they can find the 1866 ram that their card takes.

Their response was, they can't and suggested I use 1600.

I don't know who did the searching at Areca, but how can one design a product to use something that doesn't exist (or is maybe a custom order part)? I almost think they made a mistake in their manual.
