areca arc-1680 raid array goes missing - showing free drives instead - weird things..

I have an Areca ARC-1680.. firmware V1.51 2012-07-04, boot rom v1.51 2012-07-04, sas firmware 4.4.3.0.. (latest drivers) all the drives are in a supermicro 4U chassis with SAS/sata backplane.

I have four raid arrays setup..

Raid Set #000Dt which is supposed to have 9 members total..
RaidSet #001 which has 2
RaidMirrorImages which has 2
and the one that is disappearing..

RaidSetVS02 with 6 total drives..

Past few days i noticed some time out errors on slot 1, which isnt part of the issue here i dont think (i've tried pulling this particular drive)..

Suddenly today, i get timeouts and read errors on at least 2-3 different drives all at once.. slot 15 (shows failed) and slot 4 (failed as well)..

This should normally not be an issue.. as they are each part of a different raid6 array.. raidsetvs02 and raidset 000DT..

I pull those two drives out of the mix and bring the server back up..

I end up showing #00DT as 4/7 incomplete.. meanwhile i have like 5 free drives showing up.. they dont list as members at all.. and the RaidsetVS02 is gone.

Just for fun i pulled each of the "Free" drives while it was still on.. suddenly all show up as being raid members again.. however.. if you view the raidset info.. you see #00DT listed several times..

and Raidset Vs02 shows up mutiple times as well.. to the effect similar to:

etc..

If i go ahead and cycle the power.. things come back to where they were before, with only "FREE" showing up in many places and the vs02 raidset gone again.

I tried a different pcie slot.. no luck.. i've tried moving drives around in the supermicro chasis with no luck.

Nothing had changed in the past several months.. all enterprise drives..

Any thoughts on what i can do to revive the broken arrays and the one thats missing.. i am not sure how to proceed..

I do know that contacting areca either never results in an answer or take days and we have mission critical data on these drives (i'm not sure if there is a 3rd party tool, worst case, i could use to extract the data and restore to another massive drive somewhere)?

Did you put the drives back in the original order you started with?

If so you can always try running RESCUE. its a read only command nothing written to disk so its safe to run to see if it recovers anything. If it does it wont survive a reboot but there is ways to make it stick
 
The first question is do you have a current backup of all the arrays. Can you please post the entire log? Do you have the layout information of all your arrays, including the stripe sizes, RAID levels and physical drive orders?

I did put them back in the correct order at this point..

My one array 000DT shows 7 members but should be 9 i believe, which is strange.. again if i pull other drives that show "FREE" and put them back in, suddenly i get them to show as various raid members, but then i end up with the jumbled/fragmented raid arrays..

I actually got through to Benjamin at Areca..

He told me to disconnect all drives except my 000DT array.. then issue the LeVeL2ReScUe and power cycle..

I did this.. i now have the #000DT raidset, but its only showing 7 members, with one failed (slot4).. i knew slot 4 was probably bad in the first place.. he said to leave it in for now prior to this..

Now its "rebuilding" which is freaking me out, because if it was 9 drives and i'm 90% sure it was, i dont know what is going on with the data.. (its strange too, because in the hierarchy, i can see the other two drives as being #000DT drives, but they dont show up in the listing for the raidset when viewed directly)

I got ansy and decided to try putting in the vs#2 array drives (the one that wasnt showing up anymore unless i pulled/reinserted drives).. while the rebuild on the #000DT was going on.. i reset the machine.. then the #000DT went back to 4/7 incomplete..

The rebuild was also stuck at 0.0% after even 20 minutes.. not sure it was doing anything.

I'm fairly certain i know the order of the arrays and i havent changed anything..

Raid Set #000DT has 9 members.. the VS#2 problematically disappearing one has 6 members.. while the other two raid sets were fine..

Its #000DT that is now strangely showing 7 members, but the hiearchy shows the other 2 drives as #000DT but they dont show up when you view the members for that array, which is weird..

And at this point.. areca is telling me i should try good drives and recreate from backup..

but.. if i have 8 of 9 good drives.. cant i just issue the delete raidset command, which deletes the volume too.. then issue the create raidset and make it from the 8 of 9 "good" disks and NOT do an init on the volume creation and see if this works? (Same with the missing VS#2 raid set, assuming Level2rescue doesnt work with that one either)?)
 
At this point I did get vs02# recovered, I think, successfully.. I even managed to boot into windows..

But the array that I recreated shows as drive letter D in windows explorer, but then says it needs formatted.. so this didn’t quite work.. is all still lost here short of backup or is there another trick to try?
 
I've begun the arduous task of restoring data.. though i've left the "Raw" windows version of the D drive alone for now.. still hoping to find a utility that might let me restore files from it?

In meantime.. everytime i restart the server.. this D drive raid that i recreated without Init seems to vanish ( i also have missing supermicro ethernet integrated ports on the server itself).. im thinking catastrophic failure here


I've tried EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard 9.0 and Reclaime Pro.. with Reclaime Pro, seems the only option is to create an image to vhd, which is fine, but i'd like to be able to pull out files like with EaseUS.. but EaseUS seems to stall or not get all the data.. it will list a file as 30GB but then on restore its zero.. or it wont find files in some folders (corruption or just takes too long.. progress bar never moves).. still think there is a glimmer of hope with one of these types of tools?
