yes it will work, i use it in my intel board in the x16 slot with a pci video card. no problems, card is fast and reliable, the webserver is awesome.

I run my 1220 in a dedicated 16x slot (a8n32 see sig), works fantastic. Theres guidelines for running it in a non dedicated slot (SLI 8x mode), which is basically to try it one way and then try it the other.

Yes, I believe you would. But then you need an SLI motherboard with integrated video. Why not just get the 1260, and save yourself $400 in the process?

What case, power supply, and drives are you thinking about?

I 2nd this idea, I feel very intimidated by the total lack of upgrade ability. Of course I'm limited both in space and by the card, but I'm tempted to pick up a 1260 and build a dedicated system just cuz'. Go big because its a better price per port.

I'm investigating the possibility of using port multipliers with the Areca card. These run $80 for a 1-to-5 multi, so you could potentially hook 40 disks to an 8-port card. I have a feeling they wouldn't want to support this - otherwise, why buy anything but the smallest card? - but if it works I'd help stick it to the man.

Holy crap.

In *four* minutes, I had a reply from Areca. Best. Tech support. Ever.

However, they don't support port multipliers in the current firmware. Well, maybe they'll change their minds.

maybe it's time to get the logic analysizer and ICE out and start hacking at their firmware :D

Well, after slightly more than four minutes, I have a response from Areca:
We are busy in porting the PCI_X/PCIe to SAS RAID adapter.
I donot think we have time to port the port multipliers in the near future.
We will review the SATA ll controller function after we finish the SAS products.
OMG

On one hand, good luck to them - SAS would be a really nice capability to have; put in a 15k drive for boot or photoshop swap or whatever, and a bunch of big/cheap storage on the other channels of the same controller. On the other hand, good luck to them - enterprise is a big, scary place, and they could get squashed like a bug if their stuff doesn't deal with it.

On the gripping hand, good luck to them - they've done very well with their sata stuff, maybe they'll keep improving.
