areca arc-1222 upgrading r6 array to ssd issues, array acting badly

hi all,
under win 11, i'm trying to upgrade a areca raid 6 array 6 hdd devices to ssd, namely to the crucial 2 tb mx-500. I had a sata 2tb seagate 3.5 hdd fail so I decided it was time to begin the replacement process.
Firstly I'm running raid 6 across 6 drives. The first swap was pulling the failed drive and replacing with a SSD, after several hours the array is back to normal. But after replacing the 2nd drive with a ssd, the rebuild process took much longer, days not hours.
once completed the system was behaving oddly, boot times were several minutes, opening or closing apps were also v-e-r-y slow, eventually the machine would hang and I had to power cycle the machine.

The new ssd devices were checked on another machine and no issues were detected. internal diagnostics from the web i/f also didn't report any issues. The current config is right now 6 drive r6 array with 2 ssd devices and 4 hdd devices

for grins I ran some of the windows based OS validation routines and of course no issues.

Any ideas of what's going on here? does the areca controller even support ssd devices?

Should I trash the array and rebuild from ground up? I cloned the array to a single hdd so I have a backup
