Are these Raptors Under-Performing?

Actually, arguably, I would think that the 74gb raptors would be slightly slower than the 36 gb raptors

Why?

Extra platters = Slower performance. This has always been true.. The fastest drive of any product line is generally the single platter drive.

But, more importantly, is the fact tha tyou have to realize there is variance in every drive

What hdd controller are your 2x 74's on .. the onboard ICH-5? A promise card? a 3ware card? a SiL controller?

All of these things can cause a variance. Your drives are performing well.. the other drives are performing BETTER
 
They are running on my Asus A8N Sli using the onboard Nvidia RAID controller!

I don't think that nvidia's raid controller is considered a "top performer" like say, 3ware or adaptec .. but then again.. it's also nowhere near as expensive as a 3ware or adaptec :)

The 74 gig raptors are a second generation drive and are better performers than the 36 gig variants.

Single drive benchmarks show the 74 gig's outperforming the 36gig. Your above statement might be true if the 74 gig was just a 36 with more heads and platter, but they did more to the firmware and hardware of the drive to improve it's performance.
 
RAID for home use has never really made anyone to “WOW”. I tried it, then went to a single Raptor, can’t tell a difference in real use. Is your computer really slow or are the bench marks just bugging you?
 
Original poster was probably expecting a WOW and didn't get one.

People need to read more.
