are these 1090t temps normal?

System specs:

MB: Asus m4a79xtd evo
CPU: AMD 1090t Phenom II BE
CPU Cooler: Corsair A50 w/Tuniq tx4
Vid Cards: dual Sapphire 6850's in crossfire
Power Supply: Seasonic S12 600w
Case: Antec Three Hundred
Memory: GSkill 2x4GB ripjaws 1600 9-9-9-24 @1.5v, those are stock settings, only thing I changed was from 2t to 1t
Hard Drive: an old Sata1 60gb hitachi (installed to test, ssd is in the mail)


I am no pro at overclocking, I am very novice when it comes to this but with comparing my results to others it just seems like mine runs hot? or does it not? Ambient temp is 67F. These temps in hw monitor were during prime95. I set cpu voltage to 1.35 but CPU-Z doesn't show above 1.3. If I up the voltage I can get the multiplier to more than 18 but the temps are 60C+ which are unsafe right? Is this 3.6ghz the max I can do? I just read so many success stories I'm kinda bummed.

Any idea why the vcore shows less voltage than it is set at? Also these temps seem high for only being OC'd to 3.6ghz with my equipment don't they? I have been using the PC at stock settings for a few days to allow burn-in for the cpu cooler/paste. Should I be disappointed with this or is it normal?

The pc is plenty fast as is, I play Bad Company 2 totally maxed with everything enabled @1680x1050 so it does do what I need it to but I guess I was just expecting a little more out of it. I had to manually set the dram timings but once doing so it ran as advertised and it is sold as 2t but I set it at 1t and it runs fine. Other than the CPU that is all I touched but don't see how it could effect the cpu temps/results.

my 1090 runs at 22 Celsius at idle 69 degrees room temperature. With 1.5 volts and 4.1 ghz, I have never seen it over 45 degrees with a Corsair H50 water setup. Your temps are very high. No grease or improperly installed Corsair?

There is an applicator that comes with the tx4, I do believe I used a little more than necessary, I misjudged but didn't think it was bad enough to warrant redoing it. Would a little extra make "that" big of difference?

I'm starting to think maybe I should have went with the H50 if it works that much better :mad:


also these readings were taken while prime95 was being ran, not idle. It was running for around 10min at this point, I waited for temps to max out and hold steady and this is what I came up with. These temps aren't dangerous, I think I read somewhere 55 is ideal, I just expected to have more than 3.6ghz when I hit the 55C mark I guess. I'm not upset, it's a solid performer, just thought I was going to get a lot more out of my upgrade from my p35/e8400 combo I upgraded from which ran 3.6ghz at stock voltage just by cranking the fsb to match the ram at 400

dang $49 is less than a lot of straight air coolers, I may have to think about replacing this A50 if the H50's are that much better. I like cool room temps, rarely will my ambient be above 70F

For future I guess I'll just stop using air, but still, a50 that I have is huge with a 120mmm fan, I didn't expect it to be so inferior
 
I'm thinking more along the lines of either your chip runs hot, or you don't have the A50 seated correctly. Strictly speaking, the H50 is not that much better than air coolers in their respective price range, and is worse than many air coolers.

What do you have the fan speed set at? Because fan speed makes a significant difference in temperature.
 
I just have it plugged into the mb, I'm not very bright with this stuff. On that hardware monitor there is 3 fans at 99% during the test, is one of those the cpu fan? I'm pretty clueless, do you think 55C at max load 3.6ghz is high? Should I try reseating? By reseating should I wipe off all of the old thermal paste and start over or just try to wiggle the HS/fan a little then re-tighten?

Come to think of it I don't have 3 fans plugged into the MB so no idea what those 99% things are in that image, however the one above that shows a fan at 2000 rpm, that must be it?
 
crazy, I took the HS/fan off and reseated it and now the temps are way better

That shot was taken a while ago, prime95 is still running, since then 1 core has hit 38C and the other 5 have topped out at 37C. I must not have had it seated properly. This is a huge relief, I guess it looks like I can still up it more afterall lol. Thanks for reccomending something so simple, I was a little disappointed for a while there but we're back on track now, 4ghz here I come
 
btw ignore any of the extra temps that might be off thats just the program taking longer then normal to refresh the temps.. AMD only uses 1 temp sensor on their athlon II/phenom II line of processors so the program just duplicates that over all the cores.

temps look much better though and yes a little extra thermal grease can cause weird ass temp readings. as far as overclocking goes you shouldn't have any issues topping 4Ghz.. just remember to turn off the turbo mode feature.
 
well Right now I am running 3.8ghz stable at 1.4125V and under load I am getting 42C with 66F ambient temps. Any idea why cpu-z shows close to .05V less than my board is set at? What do I trust? I assume either my mb is giving less than it is set at or cpu-z is reading low. I'm going to try to hit 4ghz with the multiplier then I am going to read about the NB to see if I should focus on that, I'm scared to touch things I don't really know about so I need to do some reading first so I understand what I'm doing.

My PS wouldn't be the problem with the voltage reading lower than what it's set at would it? I mean the PS is 5 years old now but it's a Seasonic, they are built to last right?
 
If it's a Seasonic, it should last for quite a while. Besides, power supply voltage nothing to do with CPU voltage (unless the power supply voltage is out of ATX specifications). CPU voltage in bios does not always match up with the voltage in CPU-Z. Is it consistently .05v less in all situations (changed voltage, load, idle, etc?).

Overclock the NB, you will notice some definite speed increases. NB is governed by the CPU/NB voltage.
 
it isn't always .05, like right now it is .025 off, I guess I'll look into how the northbridge works then once I understand it I'll mess with it a bit. I have never done anything with northbridge in the past, any tips let me know! lol I can find the info too, I'm going to put some of this tx-4 on the NB before I start playing with it. Once I do that I'll hop back online and do some searching

having trouble taking the NB HS off, think I might have to remove MB to do it so I'm gonna take a break from it today, maybe I'll put more work into the pc tomorrow

Uhhh... the NB we're talking about is actually the IMC that resides on the CPU itself. It has nothing to do with the NB on the motherboard. Don't bother with taking the motherboard heatsink off.

Voltages tend to be off in my experience with Asus boards, especially when you start messing with the Load Line Calibration (LLC). Gigabyte in my experience has been much more stable in voltage, MSI is a little closer than Asus.

Also why I haven't done anything with it yet, before I start changing bios I want to be 100% certain I dont screw stuff up. Here's a guide that should help you. The first part is the X4, but that information is still relevant for the X6. There is a specific Thuban section, but it's isn't complete yet.

The only real difference between an x4 and x6 is turbo core. It's up to you whether or not you want to use turbo core, but I would personally just disable it. It never really works out all that well in my experience.
 
just an update

With only having an air cooled hs/fan for the CPU I ended up chickening out on going any further. My OC is still sitting @ 3.8ghz and will most likely stay there. I did have a few issues when running prime95 for a while, one of the cores gave me a "worker stopped" error and it would stop testing that core and the only way to fix it was up the cpuV to 1.435 which is as high as or even higher than some of those with 4ghz or higher OC's with much better coolers than I have.

Even though I'm not pushing this system to the limit I learned a lot and next build with a bulldozer I will plan the build a little better. I'll probably go for some sort of water cooling and I'll definitely go for best motherboard not the cheapest to get it done. I'm sure the 8x crossfire doesn't hurt my performance that much but had I did the research and knew the pcie slots shared bandwidth and there was a potential hit in performance (the graphics performance is amazing nonetheless) I would have splurged for an 890fx. I am not disappointed at all and with the entire system when you factor in all of the combo deals, coupons, rebates and the fact my state has no sales tax I only dropped $700 on my entire system (was $600 until I bought the SSD) and for the money spent this thing is a beast and I am totally happy, just wish I did a couple things different is all.

anyway, just wanted to give you all an update and thank you for the help. I didn't push it as far as I was initially planning but 3.8 is a nice OC to me regardless. I learned a lot with this venture and it smokes my e8400@3.6 with 4gb ram. I didn't really "OC" that e8400, i run stock voltage etc just upped the fsb to match the ddr2-800 and it was stable. I didn't know what I was doing then, but I'm starting to understand how it works now. btw @ 3.8ghz I'm actually running 10-15C lower than I was @3.6 since re-seating the hs/fan, thanks for such a simple recommendation.
