Just wondering but is there any possible protection for your data on android smartphones for example in case of theft?

Because yes getting all your e-mails to the phone is cool and all but what happens when someone steals your phone ? Can you encrypt whole folder with mails ?

I mean what about e-mails that already were downloaded to phone?

No, if they're on the phone they are there unless you have the ability to remote-wipe your phone, which is pretty much limited to the business world.

Why not use webmail

Why don't you just not get a cell phone and use a landine, or not buy a car an ride a horse?

Android 2.2 supports this now as well.

@OP: Put a password on your phone.
