Are the 680's that bad

So I've been looking and scouring the internet trying to decide and a damn set of 5.1 speakers but still can't decide. The 680's have a good price but are they really taht much worse then the gigaworks and the Klipschs.

And anyone that has recently purchased them, how is the hiss because I'm sure that would drive me insane.
 
The quality of the bass from the 680's is not good. Sure, the 680's have more bass than the highly acclaimed multimedia apeaker sets - but it's almost impossible to get the bass output perfectly balanced with the output from the satellites. The "subwoofer" almost always overpowers the output from the sats. Furthermore, the "bass" which the "subwoofer" delivers tends to be of the muddy, crappy, one-noted variety. That's because the subwoofer's cabinet is much too small for the size of the subwoofer driver that was installed in it. And the sats themselves have drivers that are too bulky to reproduce much if any treble response at all whatsoever.

In other words, you'd get Bose-like (lack of) detail with the finesse of a cheap Cerwin-Vega speaker - a bad mix.
 
ok for my experiences:

bought the set, opened it, set it up. powered it on, immediately noticed a hummy-hiss. it was annoying. i used the speakers at medium volume for a couple hours until the center channel went dead (the output from the amp just quit). through research i've found many people have had similar problems. logitech is able to sell the system cheaply because they use a poor-quality amp that is prone to all sorts of failures, and that cheap amp also accounts for the hiss.
 
Some people get better 680's than others.

I have no hiss on mine, even with ~95% volume.

However as E4g1e said, it's hard to balance the bass with the speakers. The sub is over-powered in contrast to the overall system. However, I like the extra bass.
 
isn't the sub a 6 inch speaker with a 10 inch passive radiator? they still have a limited range though... like my bose acoustimass that would seem to transpose low bass up an octave so it would be in the range that the cabinet was tuned to...
 
The speaker is 8", and I haven't actually checked the radiator...but it is quite large.
