Opinion and question...

I think that until there is a newer and faster sata bus i.e. sata iv ssds are pretty much static.

I know there is room for improvement in nand, durabikity, wear lev, trim stuff, and controllers etc... but when can we expect a new sata standard?

I.e. as much as I would like to upgrade, going from my crucial m4 256gb drives to anything is honestly seemingly a side grade. Opunions?
 
Static? No. Good enough that you'll never upgrade for performance reasons only capacity? Yeah pretty much.

Original SSDs were 2 orders of magnitude faster than the HDDs they replaced as far as access speed, 30k IOPS vs 300 IOPS. In the absurd example of where your job wastes 30 minutes out of every hour waiting on HDD access, replacing your HDD with a 30k IOPS SSD would reduce that wait time down to 18 seconds out of every hour, a net time savings of 29 minutes and 42 seconds. Going from 30k IOPS to 90k IOPS would only save you 12 seconds out of every hour, and a SSD with 0 access time would only save you another 6 seconds.

Basically for personal use we've reached a point where our human reflexes are becoming a significant limiting factor with how much more usable speed our computers can really give us. Yeah there's applications in "big data" where 30k vs 90k IOPS is a huge deal but those systems are in data centers servicing thousands or tens of thousands of users per second, for our day to day systems, other than bragging rights, price and reliability should be your driving factor when chosing a drive.
 
The next SATA standard is SATA Express (SATA over PCI-E).

There isn't any talk about a "SATA4" because consumer-level SSDs are only hitting 500-550MB/sec, while "SATA3" allows 750MB/sec; SATA = 1.5 gigabits/sec, "SATA2" = 3 gigabits/sec, "SATA3" = 6 gigabits/sec = 600 megabytes/sec.

SATA uses 10bits words (error checking) so it's 600MB/s not 750.

Yes next standard is already in the works.

As for human reflexes SSDs are a huge improvement and usually not the limiting factor anymore, but personally I still wait for my computer to do things, probably because my media collection is on spinning disks and that won't change anytime soon.
 
In 2013 I would say YES (we are at a stall with current nand technology) since to me it is the latency of the NAND flash that is the major bottleneck for low queue depth 4K reads and writes and in the case raiding (using raid0) the flash or drives does not really lower the latency of individual 4K reads and writes. Although there are new technologies on the horizon that promise to perform closer to ram than flash and not have the limited write endurance these are still years away and may be very expensive at first.

We've got some very decent speeds. Next up is capacity, at least in my mind. Let's see those 5TB 2.5" SSDs!
 
Considering I'm still using spinning disks in several systems at home, for me price and capacity are much more important than improvements to speed.

I've got two desktops I still need to upgrade to SSD (80-128GB should work for each), but more importantly I would like to replace the 4 750GB spinning disks I use for VMs with 3 256GB SSDs, both for lower power usage and speed benefits.
 
I transcode some video. Doing the work on SSDs is much faster than doing the work on HDs.

But now I sit around 23+ hours waiting for my next piece of work rather than 20 hours. Spinning drives were fast enough for me.

We have SSDs for our business server and workstations. I would need a faster network to take advantage of any increase in SSD speed.
 
IMHO ssd's have been "fast enough" since vertex2/3 days.

Now the new metrics are size, reliability & price.

I'm really hoping to see 240/256's down to $99 sometime in the next 12 months.

If I can get 20-30k 4k random read iops & 10k random write iops, that is plenty.
