Are slim CRTs ever coming?

I am looking forward to these because I just haven't been impressed with LCD or Plasma sets (much less projectors or projection screens)... I know they are great for being thin and lightweight, but even the really good ones have not really impressed me. They still look grainy and the color never looks quite right. CRT may make a heavy and big monitor, but to me the picture is the best you can get. With LCDs and Plasmas starting to really take off, it seems like they are trying to phase out CRTs. The last news I could find searching on google is 2-3 years old and I haven't seen any slim CRTs for sale even though some of the articles mentioned they would be available in 2005 or 2006. Any news appreciated!

i dont know, it i think some companys are still making them or they may even be making a slight comeback because of all the OP out there complaining about how LCD's just suck at online FPS's, which seem to be the craze of the last few years.
you dont win any tourneys with LCD's, bottom line, and seeing how the public is so enamored with visual quality, i think there will always be a need for CRT's.
movie studio renderers dont use them, neither do serious graphic designers.

The SED's probably are what I was thinking about but in a thread I read a long time ago I must have gotten confused with slim CRTs. Really it doesn't matter, I just hope they make some advances, I dont know how most people can live with the picture quality.

I've seen "slim" crt's for sale on the net as well as a few electronics stores already. The problem is that they are proving tough to sell because:
1. They are still bulkier, heavier than lcd, plasma, DLP.
2. Some models have had geometry issues.
and the big one..
3. Screen sizes top out at around 36" or so which is considered a smaller screen in todays market.

I don't think we will see electronics companies pursuing this particular redesign of an old technology when there are newer things in the works that will not only match or beat all the advantages of crt.....but look sexy and be easy to sell as well.

thats not true at all. maybe for the office (which they were designed for in the first place) or dad paying bills, but LCD's still have a very long way to go until they hit the quality of CRT's, IF they ever do.
the ONLY advantages of LCD's over CRTs are
1) weight, footprint
2) text clarity
3) brightness, if being blinded is what you're into.
thats it. i was going to say heat also but the benq i just bought puts out just as much heat as the A7217A sitting next to it.
so in a nutshell, hopefully LCDs will die out soon as its a continuously faulty technology that doesnt seem to be getting much better.
lets pray LCDs are a passing fad, as LCD's prove that new technology is NOT better :)

Yeah I'm sorry but this statement is pretty crazy.
I'll just put a CRT on my laptop now and go along my way.
LCDs aren't going anywhere anytime soon dude and they've been around for many, many years. I don't understand what the "new" is. The first functional LCD was made in 1968. I believe the first CRT was 1922, I can't find a more definite answer on that. Even though the CRT is far older, I would hardly call anything invented in 1968 new by any sort of technological standpoint when computer components become outdated in mere months.

the new i'm talking about is all the panel options of today, that they obviously havent had up until maybe a few years ago? New also as in popular and being sold to the public who had no idea LCD was around in anything other than their wristwatch?
Yes, its generally new to 95% of the general public, so yes, we can still class it as new technology. :)

I wouldn't. Comp USA sold LCD monitors back in 1997. Granted they only had two or three models then. LCD technology is NOT new.
