Are shuttles loud?

A friend of mine has one, and I would say it's pretty quiet. Certainly quieter than my PC-75 (with 4 fans at 7v, an 80mm cpu fan, and vid card and dual psu fans).

I'd estimate it's about as loud as my laptop with both fans at high-rpm -- noticeable but not particularly objectionable.

Mine is sort of loud with a 9500 Pro, but its not as bad as a huge tower computer with 6 fans and stuff...

My sn45g with a 5900nu is much, much quieter than my midtower that has 5 fans at 7v. I can't even hear the fans on my sn45g, and the only thing that makes noise is the hard drive. I did notice that the fan on my 9600 pro was much louder, and the little case didn't do much to block the sound.

Yes space shutles are loud! :)
No, shuttles (the PSU) are quiet.
Good choice for power supply.

Pretty sure he was talking about a Shuttle SFF, not just the PSU.

My new Ultimate X3 from abspc.com IS quiet, but there IS a higher pitched sound from it.

My 1G Tbird was MUCH louder, but deaper.

It's OK though - I am not complaining.

Depends if you overclock. Besides sound being relative. My 2500+ barton at default speed is quiet even at full load. But when I bumped it up to 200mhz to a Barton 3200+ it got pretty loud, but quietier than some of my other systems. But for the most part it is quiet.

The heatpipe technology is heat or frequency variable?

The fan is temperature-controlled. Low speed is quiet, high speed is pretty loud.

Is 36 decibels 'loud'? What's something good to compare it to? One PDF I saw said 35 was borderline on sleep disruption. This the rating on fan I'm looking at.

I have had 2 shuttles...

The original one was not loud... Shuttle 24

The newest one I have is SN41G and its even quieter than the old 24.

So in my opinion, I would have to say NO... but that is also depending on what the individual thinks is loud.

well

my sn45g has this so far
ati 9800
2500 amd
512 meg ram
280 gig hard drive space.
works quite nicly as a tivo with my TV tuner card.
and run anything I throw at it.
I need some pc3200 memory if im going to over clock it.
and the fan can be set to be variabel. it will change speeds depending on the temp of the system.
[slower is quieter]

The loudest component in my Shuttle was my 9800 pro, but I fixed that with a Zalman heat pipe cooler. Which leaves the PSU as the loudest component, which I'm fixing by buying one of the new ones which are supposed to be much quieter.

I've swapped the stock sunon 80mm case fan for a Vantec. I picked up a sunon 40x40x20 which I'm feeding 7-volts to replace the whiney 40x40x10 stock northbridge fan.

At this point all that comes out of my system is a low hum. Once my PSU gets here I'm hoping that becomes a very low hum.

This is all WITHOUT the clamshell case in place until I figure what I'm going to do to fit the Zalman in place. The newer Zalman seems to like a bit of active cooling and if you mount it the way the directions tell you it sticks out a couple of milimeters too far to fit the clamshell in place. I could always mount it backwards... Either way, I've lost my PCI slot. Maybe I can find a good 1u hs/f that is less than 17mm tall. With a blowhole that would work nicely. Choices, Choices...

SB61G2
p4 2.6 @ 3.25ghz (31 degrees C idle)
1GB XMS PC4000 @ 1:1
9800pro @ 415/360
74gig WD Raptor
48x/24x/48x/16x CDRW-DVDrom

So all in all, yeah, Shuttles are quietish. There is most definatly room for improvement. In their stock form I'd say that they're louder than a Dell, but much queiter than the typical enthusiast system. How loud they are really depends on the components you have inside. I had a WD 1200jb, (8meg cache, the so called "special edition" 120 gig drive) that thing was NUTS. I never noticed just how loud it was in my old system, which was an overclocked AthlonXP 1700+.
