OK
I furballed the first post
and totally screwed the pooch on the second
(only because I couldn't revise my miss enter)
So now
Is the most important part of a sys a PSU
YES or NO Damit !

no it is not but it is still very important (sorry no is too short of a post)

Yes,
The power supply makes or breaks all the other components. Crap in equals crap out and many problems with cheap computers have to do with cheap power supplies. Would I spend more than $120 for one? Not at this time but if I want dual processer/dual core CPUs and SLI, I can make an exception.

Took a bit of takin
Butt thats how I see it

no but i had a mobo kill a set of ram at stock voltage and speeds, all 3 sticks dead. not only can a shitty mobo mess shit up but it will kill system performance

The PSU is the only part of a system that the average joe goes by price and nothing else on. Its spooky to see how many people just dont think about it.

Its equal part in any system build. Would you buy a mobo just because it took your p4 or s939 and was only $30? Would you buy ram because its only $40? What about that video card, its an nvidia fx5600 for $90. thats an awesome deal.

Shoot no. Not one person here who is serious about their system is going to buy those parts because of the price. They need to look at performance reviews. PSUs are no different.

Your system is only as good as the weakest part.

no but there was much more to my post than that and you cut me off short and im going to leave this thread because i cant stand arguing with people like you

There rest is saved :p

Spectre, that's kinda a pointless thing to argue about. i've seen plenty times where a board has killed something. i don't know why you're asking if a board has killed an optical drive though, cause they're relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.

BUT
cell is right. i've seen cases where mobo's kill other components.. some much more expensive, like the cpu or ram. ;)

but in the end, this is kinda a badly phrased question. the psu isn't the MOST important thing, but it definitly plays a huge role in system stabilitly.. specifically when you start cutting corners and get a cheap one. it's one thing to cut back on the cpu speed to save money, or get a lesser video card. you'll just get less performance, though they are quite argueably extremely important parts of a computer.
when you cut back on the psu though.. you run into issues.

moral of the story: psu isn't important, as long as you get one that exceeds the power requirements of your system and takes into accound some potential upgrades

Reread the thread maybe you can figure it out then. Or I will save you some time:

Spectre: Yes. Only component that can affect all of the others.

cell: so your saying a motherboard cant affect other components? (which i didn't say see my first comment again)

Spectre: If your mobo kills your DVD drive let me know. (Me making the point that your PSU is the only component that can kill can any other)

cell:no but i had a mobo kill a set of ram at stock voltage and speeds, all 3 sticks dead. not only can a shitty mobo mess shit up but it will kill system performance (cell answering me and then trying to make some sort of excuse ofr his position)

Spectre:Ok then. (me quoting cell's no thinking he may have gotten the point)

cell: you shouldnt quote people out of context  (cell complaining that I didn't quote his entire post including the parts not relevant ot my commoent)

Spectre: So you have had a mobo kill a DVD-ROM then? (me asking question again so he would be clear on his point and I would know if he understoiod)

cell: no but there was much more to my post than that and you cut me off short and im going to leave this thread because i cant stand arguing with people like you  (cell's response)

Spectre: Then it wasn't out of context. (me pointing out that in that case my quoting his answer to my comment alone wasn't out of context then because he said no he hasn't which is all I commented on, the rest of his comments were not relevant ot my post)

You: Spectre, that's kinda a pointless thing to argue about. i've seen plenty times where a board has killed something. i don't know why you're asking if a board has killed an optical drive though, cause they're relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.

cell is right. i've seen cases where mobo's kill other components.. some much more expensive, like the cpu or ram (You today not getting it either. Surprise a PSU can kill a CPU, mobo, or RAM just as easily if not more seeing's how it is responsible for providing that clean steady DC current)

See I see this problem with students quite often in class. They want ot answer the question they want because they have a ready set answer and are unwilling to move outside their comfort zone. That is what happened here, I just didn't let cell steer it that way.

that right there is what both cell and i are trying to argue against.
you can't say that the PSU is the only component that can kill another, because it isn't, as has been pointed out. ;)

the rest of the arguement? i don't care, it doesn't matter, because i'm not questioning you on your other points. just that one, which i will not agree with.

I say Yes, it is very important part, not only because it directly affecty every thing in the box but, A good one will last longer than any peoce of hardware in your box..if you upgrade..

My last one went thru 5 total system upgrades..CPU, mobos, video, sound mabely only twice on the sound card, and HDDs...and i expect ill be keeping my Enermax SLLI 600watt for a long time...

The point that both of you have missed is tha tthe PSU is the only one that can kill ANY other component. I never said it was the only one that could...I said it was the only one that could kill any component in the system. i did so by constructing an absolute statement by using all.

I wouldn't say the most important but it is by far the most ignored part. Too many people put so much research into the CPU, video card etc. they buy, but stick with a generic POS PSU.

Bah. Screw making a "most important" judgement on it. Pretty much every component in your system, if you get one that doesn't work right, you're gonna have a bad time. You don't have to go throwing money at it ad infinitum, just make sure you get one that works well and meets the requirements of the system you expect it to work in.
