Are Passmark numbers useful in comparisons?

I've browsed their site. Looking at newer cards to find something in the range of a Geforce 9800 GT. According to the Passmark site a Radeon HD 4770 or a Geforce GTS 250 would have similar ratings as a 9800 GT. Is this an apples to apples comparison?

not really, the cards are from completely different generations, meaning different architecture and different strengths/weaknesses and stuff
